CUTTING PARAMETERS

FOR LATH

Engr. Shakeel Ahmad

The conventional parameters include material
machinability; cutting tool material; cutting speed or
spindle speed; depth of cut; feed rate; tool geometry;
coolant; machine/ spindle power
Primary machining parameter
Cutting Speed – (v) m/min
The peripheral speed of work piece past the cutting
tool that is equal to cutting speed

D – Diameter (mm)
N – Revolutions per Minute (rpm)
 Feed – (f )
the distance the tool advances for every rotation of
work piece.

• Turning: mm/rev in/rev

• Milling: mm/tooth in/tooth
 Depth of Cut – (d)
perpendicular distance between machined surface
and uncut surface of the Workpiece.
d = (D1 – D2)/2

• Penetration of tool below original work surface

• Single parameter mm or inch.
Operating Conditions
Material Removal Rate – (MRR)
Volume of material removed in one revolution
MRR = π D d f (mm3)
Job makes N revolutions/min
MRR = π D d f N (mm3/min)
In terms of v MRR is given by
MRR = 1000 v d f (mm3/min)
MRR = v f d (mm3/s or in3/min)
where v = cutting speed; f = feed; d = depth of cut
Power and cutting time
The power required in turning process is given by the
following formula:

Power= Fv

Where
‘F’ is cutting force
v cutting speed
Cutting time
T= L/v (L= fv=length of job)
Examples
A cylindrical stainless steel rod with length L=150 mm,
diameter D0 = 12 mm is being reduced in diameter to Df =11
mm by turning on a lathe. The spindle rotates at N = 400
rpm, and the tool is travelling at an axial speed of υ=200
mm/min

Calculate:
a. The cutting speed V (maximum and minimum)
b. The material removal rate MRR
c. The cutting time ‘t’
‘d. The power required
Example
A shaft is to be machined on a lathe from a Ø 25mm
bar. Calculate the machining time if speed V is 60
m/min., turning feed is 0.2mm/rev.
