Types of activities for developing cultural

awareness

• Independent cultural information search

The teacher should use this method to involve


students into individual acquaintance with
information related to different cultures.
• Independent cultural search allows student’s to
find the information by their own and in this
way to dive deeper into all the details and
peculiarities of some culture.
Discussions

• Using
discussions as
a primary
teaching
method
allows you to
stimulate
critical
thinking.
• As you establish a rapport with your students, you
can demonstrate that you appreciate their
contributions at the same time that you challenge
them to think more deeply and to articulate their
ideas more clearly. They can share some cultural
peculiarities they know and use with others and
improve their own knowledge. Frequent questions,
whether asked by you or by the students, provide a
means of measuring learning and exploring in-
depth the key concepts of the course.
Debates and disputes
Classroom debates and
disputes are effective ways to
foster cooperation, critical
thinking, and enthusiasm for
learning among middle
school students. Teachers
can use debates in almost
any discipline, include
students of all reading levels,
and, when properly
orchestrated, help students
comprehend important and
complex issues.
• Classroom debates is an enjoyable and effective
exercise for students and teachers. As a teacher ,
you can prepare a lot of information related to
different cultures, to make questions or riddles
or tasks related to it, to involve all the students
in working, learning environment.
Projects

• Project-based learning has


proven to be one of the most
effective ways to engage
students and provide a practical
application for what they’re
learning.
• School projects can give
the child an opportunity
to dive deeper into the
information (in this case
related to some culture or
nation) and practice
,challenge themselves in
it. Also it allows the
student that struggles with
written tests to reveal the
acquired knowledge in a
hands-on, creative way, to
“relive” this information
Role-plays

• Role-play is any speaking activity when you


either put yourself into somebody else's shoes, or
when you stay in your own shoes but put
yourself into an imaginary situation.
• Imaginary situations - Functional language for a
multitude of scenarios can be activated and
practiced through role-play. 'At the restaurant',
'Checking in at the airport', 'Looking for lost
property' are all possible role-plays.

cultural
peculiarities with
others
The teacher can manage different situations using special information related to
different cultures and nations. Children can perceive the information, realize it
and use in practice.
For example the teacher may imagine a situation “ A meeting with foreigner” ,
it can be Italian, American, French and give children some dialogues or texts and
let them make dialogues based on it.
Games

Incorporating fun classroom
games into your lesson plan
offers a simple way to motivate
your students, and encourage
them to draw on their
creativity and imagination, but
also to develop their cultural
awareness.
• Using games/simulations in learning ‘games can
provide realistic and safe ways of examining the
real world whilst providing an enjoyable and
supportive learning environment’ (Wildman and
Reeves 1995,p.334
