 The international Organization for standardisation (ISO) is an international

standard setting body composed of representatives from various national standard


organizations.

 It was founded on 23rd February 1947 and is headquarted in Geneva,Switzerland.

 ISO had developed over 18500 international Standards on a variety of subjects


and some 1100 new ISO standards are published every year.

 ISO is a non- governmental organization that forms a link between the public and
the private sectors.
 The three official languages of the ISO are English, French, and Russian.

 The organization which today known as ISO began in 1926 as the international Federation of the
National Standardizing Associations.

 ISO is a voluntary organization whose members are recognized authorities on standards , each one
representing one country. The bulk of the work of ISO is done by the 2700 technical committees,
subcommittees, and working groups. Each committee and subcommittee is headed by a
Secretariat from one of the member organizations.
STAGES OF ISO
 International Standards are developed by ISO technical committees (TC) and subcommittees (SC)
by a process with six steps
 Stage 1 : Proposal stage
 Stage 2 : Preparatory stage
 Stage 3 : Committee stage
 Stage 4 : Enquiry stage
 Stage 5 : Approval stage
 Stage 6 : Publication stage

 The standards are protected by copyright and most of them must be purchased .
 About 300 of the standards produced by ISO and IEC’s Joint Technical Committee 1 (JTC 1) have
been made publicly available.

 ISO 9001 is a quality management system that can be integrated into any business.
 It is focussed on ensuring the business delivers a consistent level of quality to its customers.

ISO 14001

 ISO 14001 is an environmental management system that can be integrated into any
business

 The main focus is to reduce the costs, reuse resources and if unable to reuse,
recycle as much as possible.

 It can highlight areas within the business that have high consumption or wastage
therefore leading to cost savings

 In industries ensuring that the company is maintaining its legal and regulatory
requirements.
