CABLE TELEVISION

 originated in the United States in the late 1940s and were


designed to improve reception of commercial network
broadcasts in remote and hilly areas
 any system that distributes television signals by means of
coaxial or fibre-optic cables
CABLE TELEVISION

 “Community Antenna Television” (CATV)

 these cable systems use a “community antenna” to receive


broadcast signals, which they then retransmit via cables to
homes and establishments in the local area subscribing to
the service
CABLE TELEVISION

 a frequency-conversion device is connected to the television set of


the subscriber to accommodate these signals of non-broadcast
frequencies
 provides distribution of multi-channel television signals from the
HEADEND to its paying SUBSCRIBERS thru a system of amplifiers
and coaxial cables that comprise the distribution network
HISTORY

 Cable television originated in the United States almost


simultaneously in Arkansas, Oregon and Pennsylvania in
1948 to enhance poor reception of over-the-air television
signals in mountainous or geographically remote areas

HISTORY

 Today, cable provides video entertainment, Internet


connectivity, and digital telephone service to millions of
consumers. What began over a half century ago among a
few visionary pioneers has led to the creation of
approximately 800 programming networks viewed by
over 93% of Americans.  And they provide it incredible
Internet Speeds of up to 2 GBPS, with those speeds
continuing to climb.

VERSUS BROADCASTING & SATELLITE

• With “Cable” the distribution medium is a physical cable running


from a cable company’s “head-end” (the demarcation point in a
given neighborhood) to the consumer’s (audience) home or place of
business (the various destinations).  

• With “Broadcast” Television the distribution medium is a radio


frequency wireless transmission from one earthbound
terrestrial location to another terrestrial location. 

• With “Satellite” Television the distribution medium is a radio


frequency wireless transmission from an orbiting satellite
directly to the consumer’s home or business.
