Background
The morama bean (Tylosema esculentum) is an underutilized crop indigenous to the arid and semiarid regions of
Botswana, Namibia, and South Africa and forms part of the diet of native populations. Botanically, morama beans
belong to the family Fabaceae (Leguminosae), subfamily Ceasalpinoidae, and genus Tylosema. Morama is a creeping
plant, that produces stems several meters long and generates big perennial tubers and hardshell beans that reaches
maturation in late autumn. The beans in particular have been reported by different authors as an excellent source of
good quality protein and oil contents. The leaves of morama can be consumed by livestock.
