Agriculture
 Sub-arctic climate – only hardy crops can survive
 Agriculture possible in sheltered valleys and lands bordering steppes
 Cultivated crops include – cereals (barley, oats, rye) and root crops
(potatoes)
 Ex: Sweden – only 6% of total land cultivated
─ only 2% of labour engaged in agri
Traditional Occupations
Trapping of fur-bearing animals
 Muskrat, Ervine, Mink, Silver fox
 Traditional → individual hunting(log cabins, automatic rifles)
 Present-day → fur farms (1880s ─)

Lumbering
 Basis – vast reserves of coniferous forests
 Resource – softwood trees
 Production – lumberjacks, machines
 Rivers for transportation – Canada, Sweden profit; Siberia suffers from
frozen rivers
 Saw-milling → timber,plywood,planks
 Paper and pulp industry → newsprint, papermaking
 Furniture, matches, crates, packing cases
 By-products → turpentine, rayon, varnishes
