Agriculture
Sub-arctic climate – only hardy crops can survive
Agriculture possible in sheltered valleys and lands bordering steppes
Cultivated crops include – cereals (barley, oats, rye) and root crops
(potatoes)
Ex: Sweden – only 6% of total land cultivated
─ only 2% of labour engaged in agri
Traditional Occupations
Trapping of fur-bearing animals
Muskrat, Ervine, Mink, Silver fox
Traditional → individual hunting(log cabins, automatic rifles)
Present-day → fur farms (1880s ─)
Lumbering
Basis – vast reserves of coniferous forests
Resource – softwood trees
Production – lumberjacks, machines
Rivers for transportation – Canada, Sweden profit; Siberia suffers from
frozen rivers
Saw-milling → timber,plywood,planks
Paper and pulp industry → newsprint, papermaking
Furniture, matches, crates, packing cases
By-products → turpentine, rayon, varnishes
