Motor Sizing for Escalator

Problem:
An electric motor is to be selected to drive an
PHILIPPINE ELECTRICAL CODE

escalator. The escalator is 32 in. wide and can accommodate

two riders side by side; hence the loading can be considered
as uniformly distributed with 250 lb/ft. Linear speed is 75
ft/min. The escalator angle is 40 and its lifting height is 6
meter. Mechanical efficiency of the system is 50%.
Determine the motor size to be specified for this
escalator.

Solution:
Observe that the escalator lifts the entire burden an average height
of 6 meter during the complete ascent of one rider.
Length  20/sin40 31 ft

Time for ascent  31/75  0.413 min

Motor Sizing for Elevator

The formula for sizing the motor for a lift is as follows:

PHILIPPINE ELECTRICAL CODE

M  P x 75 x 9.81 x s x (1CF )

where:
P – is the rated passenger number in the car,
75 – stands for 75 kg/passenger;
9.81 – is the acceleration due to gravity;
s - is the rated speed;
CF – is the counterweight factor (a factor less than 1);
 - is the total efficiency of the installtion (taken around
85%)

1. Problem:
In a lift system which has an MG set supplying its
PHILIPPINE ELECTRICAL CODE

DC hoist, calculate the size of the AC prime mover for a 49

passenger lift, running at 1.6 m/s, if the efficiency of the
installation (including the MG set, the DC hoist motor and
the shaft efficiency) is 70%, and the counterweight ratio is
40%.
Solution:
Applying the formula, we have
M  P x 75 x 9.81 x s x (1CF )

M  49 x 75 x 9.81 x 1.6 x (10.4)  49.44 kW

2. Problem:
An 8 passenger hydraulic lift, runs at a speed of 1
PHILIPPINE ELECTRICAL CODE

m/s, and has an overall efficiency of 80%. If the mass of

the car is equal to the rated load in the car, then calculate
the required minimum size of the motor for the pump
unit.
Solution:
As the mass of the car and associated equipment
is equal to the rated load, then CF can be taken as -1.
Thus, applying the formula gives a motor size of:

M  8 x 75 x 9.81 x 1.0 x (1(1)) 14.7 kW

Generator Field Control
PHILIPPINE ELECTRICAL CODE

Determine the conductor ampacity for a 460-V, 3-

phase, 60 Hz ac feeder supplying a group of six elevators.
The 460-V ac drive motor nameplate rating of the largest
MG set for one elevator is 40 hp and 52 A, and the
remaining elevators each have a 30-hp, 40-A, ac drive
motor rating for their MG sets. In addition to a
motor/operation controller rated 10 A continuous to
operate microprocessors, relays, power supplies, and the
elevator car door operator. The MG sets are rated
continuous.

Solution:

Conductor Ampacity. Conductor ampacity is determined

as follows:
(a)In accordance with 6.20.2.3 (D) and 6.20.7.1, use Table
4.30.2.2 (E), for intermittent duty (elevators). For
intermittent duty using a continuous rated motor, the
percentage of nameplate current rating to be used is
140%.
(b)For the 30-hp ac drive motor,
140% x 40 A = 56 A
(c) For the 40-hp ac drive motor,
140% x 52 A = 73 A
(d) The total conductor ampacity is the sum of all the
motor currents :
Motor Sizing for Elevator

Solution:
(1 motor x 73 A) + (5 motors x 56 A) = 353 A
PHILIPPINE ELECTRICAL CODE

(e)Per 620.14 and Table 620.14, the conductor (feeder)

ampacity would be permitted to be reduced by the use of
a demand factor. Constant loads are not included. For six
elevators, the demand factor is 0.79. The feeder diverse
ampacity is, therefore, 0.79 x 353 A = 279 A.
(f) Per 430.24 and 215.3, the controller continuous
current is 125% x 10 = 12.5 A
(g) The total feeder ampacity is the sum of the diverse
current and all the controller continuous current.
Itotal = 279 A + (6 elevators x 12.5 A) = 354 A
(h) This ampacity would be permitted to be used to select
the wire size,

Adjustable Speed Drive Control
PHILIPPINE ELECTRICAL CODE

Determine the conductor ampacity for a 460-V, 3-

phase, 60 Hz ac feeder supplying a group of six identical
elevators. The system is adjustable-speed SCR dc drive.
The power transformers are external to the drive (motor
controller) cabinet. Each elevator has a separate
motion/operation controller connected to the load side of
the main line disconnect switch rated 10 A continuous to
operate microprocessors, relays, power supplies, and the
elevator car door operator. Each transformer is rated95
kVA with an efficiency of 90%.

Conductor Ampacity. Conductor ampacity is determined

as follows:
(a)Calculate the nameplate rating of the transformer:
I  95kVA x 1000 133 A
3 x 460 x 0.90

(b) In accordance with 620.13(D), for six elevators, the

total conductor ampacity is the sum of all the
currents.
6 elevators x 133 A = 798 A

(c) In accordance with 620.14 and Table 620.14, the

conductor (feeder) ampacity would be permitted to be
reduced by the use of demand factor. Constant loads are
not included. For six elevators, the demand factor is 0.79.
The feeder diverse ampacity is, therefore,
0.79 x 798 A = 630 A
(d) Per 430.24 and 215.3, the controller continuous
current is 125 % x 10 = 12.5 A
(e) The total feeder ampacity is the sum of the diverse
current all the controller constant current.
Itotal = 630 A + (6 elevators x 12.5 A) = 705 A
(f) This ampacity would be permitted to be used to select
the wire size.
