Research Question
and Engineering goal:
“Can a biofuel be made using ingredients
indigenous to tropical countries and
islands, to facilitate power loss during a
natural disaster?”, “Develop a power
sustaining biofuel through an indigenous
plant from a tropical island/country.”
Identification of
Problem:
• Began thinking of what problems
could be solved with a simple
solution
• Found a big problem to focus on
• Used previously found knowledge
to develop theories and ideas
Sources Used:
Peer reviewed articles that analyzed
the potential of bio diesel with news
articles on natural disasters
To expedite the
process:
- Use keywords when searching
- Skim through the abstract
- Use multiple search engines

Source 2 Summary:
The authors of this article state
that biofuels need to be
developed differently, otherwise
they can have long term effects
on the environment. This is due
to the lack of a proper way of
matching a biofuel to a motor.
In other words the wrong
biofuel is being put in the wrong
motor, thus causing excessive
pollution.
Lit Review:
Didn’t help since I ended
up not using most of the
information I found during
the writing of the lit
review.
Future
Adjustments:
- Research more
information on the
methodology of
production
- Choose articles that really
help
Procedure
Procedure
Summarized Procedure:
1. Brew ethanol by dissolving sugar in a
temperate water
2. Add brewers yeast to sugar water
3. Let the ethanol ferment for 24 hours
4. Take out an organic oil
5. Fill half of a container with ethanol
and oil
6. Shake the container for around
minute and let rest for 5 minutes
7. The substance that forms on the top
is your bio diesel
Procedure Challenges:
Time management and Dosage problems
What I would do
differently:
Set a schedule for frequent test
and experiments, write in lab note
book more frequently, and keep
journal more organized.
Paper Work
Challenges with Lit Review:
• Finding beneficial sources
• Finding Peer reviewed sources with research I needed
• Finding enough relevant articles
Challenges with GSEF Paper Work:
• Mainly procedure formation
Challenges with Journal:
• Organization, and graphing
Challenges with Tri-Fold Board:
• No issues due to accountability from having to turn in progress of
board
Advice to Next Freshman:
• Don’t turn anything in late
• Do something each day
• keep research journal neat and organized
• Choose a project that is reasonable and accomplishable
Conclusion:
My project couldn't be considered
successful due to complications with
efficiency, I would need to tweak the
production quality as well as quantity of
the project.
My Overall Science Fair
Experience:
Fun and a little stress full, but I learned a
lot and had a great experience designing
and creating my project the whole time.
