MENU
O In eateries like restaurants,
a menu is a list of food and
beverage offered to the
customer. A menu may be à
la carte – which guests use
to choose from a list of
options – or table d'hôte, in
which case a pre-
established sequence of
courses is served.
Table d'hôte
O In restaurant terminology a table
d'hôte (French term "table of the
host") menu is a menu where multi-
course meals with only a few choices
are charged at a fixed total price.
Such a menu may be called prix
fixe ("fixed price"). The terms set
meal and set menu are also used.
The cutlery on the table may also
already be set for all of the courses.
A la carte
O In restaurants, à la carte is the
practice of ordering individual
dishes from a menu in a
restaurant, as opposed to
table d'hôte, where a set menu
is offered. It is an early 19th
century loan from French
 meaning "according to the
menu.
