CHAPTER 85
Preposition of
Time

1.For
2.Since
3.Ago
Time Preposition - For
• We use for to answer the question 'How long?“
For is usually followed by a period of time, often a
number of hours, days, weeks, months, years, etc.
They lived there for over 40 years.

• For can be used with past, present and future tenses.

Present simple: They only use it for two or three
weeks a year.
Present perfect: I've used miles for years.
Past perfect: They'd used pints and gallons for a
long time.
Past simple: I lived in France for a year.
Future: I'll go on using them for the rest of my
life.

• We don't use for with expressions like: all morning,

all day, all evening, all year, all my life, etc.
I've used this car all my life. (NOT for all my life)
Since
We use since + a point in time to say when something
started :
She lived here since the 1970s

OR (with a negative verb) to say when something stopped.

The man hasn't lived in France since 1962.

• Since is often followed by a subject + a verb to show the

point in time.
Young people here have used the metric system
since they were born.

• We usually use since with the present perfect.

The British have had the metric system since the
1970s.

• We use ever since when we want to emphasise that

something has continued without stopping for a period of
time.
Ever since then some people have been a bit
unhappy about it.
Ago
• We use ago to say when something
happened in the past.
Ari bought this plane two years ago.

• We put ago after the expression of time.

ten years ago / a few days ago (NOT
ago ten years)

• We use ago with the past simple (and

sometimes with the past continuous). But
we don't use it with the present perfect.
A few months ago they announced
other design changes.(We can't say: 'A
few months ago they have announced
other design changes.")
