Adverbs and prepositions for Present perfect (yet, 8 hours
just, already, ever, never, since and for).

Objectives

● Use the adverbs and prepositions (yet, just, already, ever, never, since and for)
correctly within the present perfect tense.
● Recognize the structures of the simple past and the present perfect tenses.
● Talk about daily experiences using simple past and present perfect.
● Develop the different activities proposed along this guide.

1. Presentation

Dear student, after developing this guide you will be able to recognize the differences
between the simple past and the present perfect tense. The main idea is that you use
those two tenses to talk about experiences in the past and along your life. Additionally, you
will learn the correct use of different adverbs in Present Perfect.

1.1 Initial reflection

Look at the following examples:

1. I saw the movie yesterday.


2. I have seen the movie three times.

Answer the questions based on the previous sentences:

1. What is the meaning of “saw” in Spanish? _________________


2. What is the meaning of “have seen” in Spanish? ______________

1. PAST SIMPLE TENSE

USES

● Something that happened once in the past:


I met my wife in 1983.
We went to Spain for our holidays.
They got home very late last night.

● Something that happened several times in the past:


When I was a boy, I walked a mile to school every day.
We swam a lot while we were on holiday.
They always enjoyed visiting their friends.

● Something that was true for some time in the past:


I lived abroad for ten years.
He enjoyed being a student.
She played a lot of tennis when she was younger.
● We often use expressions with ago with the past simple:
I met my wife a long time ago.

We use did to make questions with the past simple:


Did she play tennis when she was younger?
Did you live abroad?
When did you meet your wife?
Where did you go for your holidays?

But questions with who often don't use did:


Who discovered penicillin?
Who wrote Don Quixote?

We use didn't (did not) to make negatives with the past simple:


They didn't go to Spain this year.
We didn't get home until very late last night.
I didn't see you yesterday. 

PRACTICE
1. . Fill in the correct simple past forms.

THE STRANGE SOLDIER

It was a beautiful sunny morning in Mexico City. The date was October 10th, the year was 1593.

In the main square of the city, soldiers stood in front of the Royal Palace. The people of the city came and
went as usual. But there was something strange about one of the soldiers: he wore a different uniform from
the others. When the other soldiers saw him, they began asking him questions. “Who are you? Where are

2.PRESENT PERFECT
(Review)
The present perfect is formed from the present tense of the verb have and the past
participle of a verb.
USES

● For something that started in the past and continues in the present:


They've been married for nearly fifty years.
She has lived in Liverpool all her life.

● When we are talking about our experience up to the present:


I've seen that film before.
I've played the guitar ever since I was a teenager.
He has written three books and he is working on another one.

We often use the adverb ever to talk about experience up to the present:


My last birthday was the worst day I have ever had.
and we use  never for the negative form:
Have you ever met George?
Yes, but I've never met his wife

● for something that happened in the past but is important in the present:


I can't get in the house. I've lost my keys.
Teresa isn't at home. I think she has gone shopping

We use have/has been when someone has gone to a place and returned:


A: Where have you been?
B: I've just been out to the supermarket.
A: Have you ever been to San Francisco?
B: No, but I've been to Los Angeles.
But when someone has not returned, we use have/has gone:
A: Where's Maria? I haven't seen her for weeks.
B: She's gone to Paris for a week. She'll be back tomorrow. 
3. PRESENT PERFECT WITH TIME ADVERBIALS

The present perfect tense is commonly used with the indefinite time adverbs never, ever,
just, yet, already.

Production exercise
1. Write a text of at least 15 lines talking about something that you consider that has
changed the humankind.
- Use the past simple tense and the present perfect tense.
-Use and underlight the adverbs – “yet, already ,ever, never, since, for, just,
always”
2. With the text , now you will record and audio or video in order to evaluate the
pronunciation .
Example :

I’ve always considered that the agricultural technologies started to deteriorate the
quality of the food that we have consumed for years.
The big industries have considered that the performance and money were more
important than nutrition, and they haven’t understood the danger of the bad
agricultural practices yet
