Current Market trends
• Pulse growers continue to suffer low prices for past two year in
a row. But has not shown impact on production for kharif crop.
• Policy makers have failed to use interventions to chock the
supplies.
• Farm gate prices have stayed below the Minimum Support
Prices creating rural distress.
• In August 2017, the government restricted import of Pigeon
Peas , moong and Black Mapte by imposing quota of 200K
tonne import on Pigeon Peas and 300 k tonne on moong and
Black mapte taken together.
• Chick peas also brought under duty with duty of 60% applied
Current Market trends and Prices
• Presently it is estimated that the carry over stock of pigeon peas is
more than 1.8 Million tons, Moong and Black Mapte being 470K tons
and Chick peas being close to 3 million tons.
• 2018 crop of Pigeon peas, Moong and Black Mapte is a bit short, still
the huge carry over stock is balancing it.
• Prices are ranging below the MSP, with prices of Pigeon peas, Moong
and Black Mapte showing some northward trend, but still below the
MSP.
• Sowing for the Rabi Crop for Chick peas is reduced by 25-30% as a result
of lack of rains, ultimate shortage expected to be 15-20%
• 2019 Being a year of General Election, the government is committed to
keep the import restrictions on and allow the prices to match up with
MSP
Long term view
• The country seems to be moving towards self
sufficiency at the current consumption level.
• Scope to increase the consumption is high.
Efforts need to be diverted from production to
consumption promotion
• Imports for some years will remain restricted.
