FROM DAPITAN TO MANILA
 Cuba- A colony of Spain. There was a shortage of physicians to
minister to the needs of Spanish troops and the Cuban people.

 Ferdinand Blumentritt – told Jose Rizal of the health situation


in war-ridden Cuba and advised him to volunteer as army
physician there.

 Rizal sent a letter to Governor-General Ramon Blanco that he


had offered his services as a military surgeon in Cuba.

 July 30, 1896

Governor-General Ramon Blanco gave permission to Jose


Rizal to travel to Cuba as a doctor in the Spanish army; an
opportunity he never did get to experience. Rizal’s request, along
with the approval, has been erroneously used for decades to
promote the vulgar Marxist interpretation of Rizal as pro-Spanish.

 On the morning of July 31, 1896, his last day in Dapitan, Rizal busily
packed his things. He was scheduled to leave the town on board the
España, which was sailing back to Manila. He had sold his lands and
other things he owned to his friend, mostly natives of Dapitan.

 At 5:30 in the afternoon, he and eight other companions embarked on


the steamer. His eight companions were Josephine; Narcisa (his sister);
Angelica (daughter of Narcisa); his three nephews, Mauricio (son of
Maria Rizal ), Estanislao (son of Lucia Rizal), and Teodosio (another
son of Lucia Rizal); and Mr. And Mrs. Sunico.

From Dapitan to Manila

 At midnight, Friday, July 31, 1896, the steamer departed for


Manila.

 When he could no longer see the dim shoreline, he turned


sadly into his cabin. He wrote in his diary: "I have been in
that district four years, thirteen days, and a few hours."

 Rizal had a pleasant trip from Dapitan to Manila, with stopovers
in Dumaguete, Cebu, Iloilo, Capiz and Romblon.

 August 19, 1896 – Katipunan plot to overthrow Spanish rule by


means of revolution was discovered by Father Mariano Gil.

 On August 26, 1896- Andres Bonifacio and Katipunan raised


the cry of revolution in the hills of Balintawak.

 Rizal was worried for two reasons upon learning the eruption of
revolution and the raging battles around Manila.

1. The violent revolution which he believed to be premature and


would only cause much suffering and terrible loss of human
lives and property had started,

2. It would arouse Spanish vengeance against all Filipino patriots.

 While Jose Rizal was patiently waiting on the cruiser Castilla


for the next steamer to take him to Spain, the outbreak of
Philippine Revolution begun.

 August 30, 1896 – Jose Rizal received from Governor-General


Ramon Blanco two letters of introduction for the Minister of
War and the Minister of Colonies blaming him for the raging
revolution.

 2 September 1896

Rizal was transferred to the boat Isla de Panay at 6:00 o’clock in the
evening. He was met by the captain of the boat, Capt. Alemany, and was
given the best cabin. Later, he wrote a letter to his mother informing her
of his good health on board the ship. He informed his mother of his
departure for Cuba, comforting her that everybody is in the hands of the
Divine Providence. To his sisters, he urged them to take good care and
and love their aged parents the way they expect their children to love
them.

 8 September 1896: A crucial day for our hero. The Isla De
Panay arrive in Singapore had Rizal Known of the secret
communications and the coded telegrams perhaps he would have
remaind in the British Colony.

 12 September 1896: The minister of the colonies sent another


communication to the government, with the information that
Rizal had left Isla de Panay boat for Barcelona with the
instructions of the Governor General.

 September 30, 1896- the steamer anchored at Malta.

 October 3 – The steamer arrived in Barcelona with Rizal a


prisoner on board. He was already arrested before reaching
Barcelona. He was kept heavy guard in his cabin for three days.
General Eulogio Despujol (Military Commander in Barcelona)
interviewed Jose Rizal and told him that he would go back to
Manila.

 October 6, 1896- Jose Rizal departed from Barcelona to face


trial in the Philippines.

 Dr. Antonio Maria Regidor and Sixto Lopez sent telegrams to


an English lawyer, Hugh Fort, to rescue Jose Rizal from the
Spanish streamer when it arrived at Singapore but Chief Justice
Lionel Cox denied it, on the ground that it was beyond the
jurisdiction of the civil court as it was warship of foreign power
and that would be against International Law.
