What’s new in RNT_Dim v8.0
LTE support in RNT_Dim. LTE consist of 3 modules that are
independent, i.e. each one of them may be activated separately:

•Coverage module – calculates the site count based on air interface

configuration, size of user transmission, antenna schemes, schedulers
used, etc.

•Capacity module – calculates the total throughput achievable in the cell

and site count based on inter-site distance obtained from Cov module or
from direct user input

•Baseband module – calculates the site count from hardware point of

view based on the number of subscribers in the network taken from
capacity module or from direct user input

New 3G project creation (17/24)

Depending on selected BTS product line user needs to provide basic information related to baseband configuration (Master and/or Extension System
Module in Flexi case, number of WSPA, WSPC or WSPF cards in Ultra Site case)

In case when RF chaining feature is selected user has to specify how many sites are connected to one BTS. Number of sites is described by 'Sites
per BTS' parameter.

Next parameter called 'No. of BTSs' describes how many BTSs of particular BTS type are defined in given phase.

In RU30 / I-HSPA rel.4 if at least one SM rel.2/EUBB subrack was selected additional parameter called "HSDPA BTS peak throughput" needs to be
provided by user. HSDPA BTS peak thr. defines the maximum HSDPA thr. that can be achieved with System Modules rel.2. Based on this parameter
tool calculates required number of HSDPA licenses (HSDPA BTS processing steps). HSDPA BTS peak thr. can be equal or lower than HSDPA BB
thr. (please see description below) which is applicable for HSDPA baseband resources allocation on SM rel.2/EUBB subrack

Next fields of 'BTS details' menu contains parameters related to HSPA schedulers. The parameters are:
Scheduler name - HSDPA scheduler name. In case of RU30/I-HSPA rel.4 scheduler needs to be selected per System Module (unless only HW rel.1
is selected).
Max number of HSPA cells per scheduler - number of cells assigned to shared scheduler (not applicable for RU30/I-HSPA rel.4 with SM rel.2/EUBB)
Max HSDPA throughput - In RU30/I-HSPA rel.4 user needs to specify max HSDPA BB throughput for HSDPA scheduler located at SM rel.2/EUBB.
Based on this value tool calculates HSDPA scheduler baseband resources.
Min HSUPA L1 throughput - The maximum HSUPA combined L1 throughput. Please note that for HSUPA case tool decides where HSUPA scheduler
will be allocated, therefore in some cases (e.g. 2 SM rel.2 selected with L1 thr<>"N/A") and all HSUPA users can be allocated at one System Module,
the second System Module is without HSUPA.

Site Based Dimensioning

• Current approach allows to perform network dimensioning for

homogenous network
– Equal site configuration
– Equal traffic per site (traffic based on assumptions)
• As an output “average” site configuration is obtained
– Very good solution for new network dimensioning
– Very good solution for existing network roll out/upgrade

• For existing network, in certain cases more precise results can be

achieved due to more detailed input traffic data.
– Real site configuration (number of carriers, activated features)
– Real traffic per site (traffic data from counters)
• As an output results for real sites are obtained
– Very good solution for site(s) roll out/upgrade
– Very good solution for detailed swap dimensioning

• Requirements:
– Calculations per site
– Traffic/Configuration data input (delivered from operator)

Site Based Dimensioning

Due to significant number of sites, it is difficult to set all parameters in the

tool manually.
– Common site parameters (e.g. features) will be defined in the tool, while traffic
model and BaseBand configuration will be loaded from the excel file
▪ User will define only few areas (common site parameters)
▪ User will load many sites to given area
▪ Each site will contain individual traffic and BB configuration

Due to detailed traffic, load calculation will be performed per site.

– Traffic calculation will be performed for each site independently

BaseBand calculations need to be performed per site

– No significant changes have to be applied to current approach.

Network configuration panel enables setting parameters common for all calculation modules (Coverage
module, Capacity module and BaseBand module).

All the parameters are divided into 4

groups:
•the yellow group consists of phase
related buttons,
•the green group contains deployment
related parameters,
•the red group are the features, that
can be activated in designed network,
•the blue group contains parameters
related to covered area and maximum

Configuration Tabs – Services
Services configuration panel enables setting the set of services that will be investigated in enabled
calculation modules

Services may be created, deleted, enabled and disabled using the buttons in yellow group.
The services that may be created are the data transmission and voice services based on
different voice codecs.
User can also specify for which of enabled calculation modules (Coverage - cov and Capacity and
baseband - cap) and phases certain service will be assigned - separately for each one of the
created services. Please note that there must be assigned at least one service for every enabled
calculation module in each phase.

Configuration Tabs – Traffic demand
Traffic configuration (Traffic demand) panel enables defining the traffic model in simulated
network – each of defined services is treated separately.

Traffic model drop-down menu (marked red) enables user to choose from several traffic models:
• Data Volume per subscriber - traffic that is generated by single subscriber of certain service in specific area
and phase
• Throughput per subscriber - the throughput that is generated by single subscriber of certain service in each
phase
• Data Volume per area - traffic that is generated by all subscribers of certain service in specific area and phase
• Throughput per area - the throughput that is generated by all subscribers of certain service in each phase
• BHCA, call/session duration and activity per subscriber – busy hour call attempts, etc.

Calculation Tabs – Calculate coverage
Calculate Coverage panel contains parameters for coverage dimensioning (for each of created
phases separately), which are divided into several groups:

•General Parameters
•Transmitting End
•Receiving End
•System Overhead
•Capacity
•Channel
•Propagation (for outdoor/macro
case scenarios)
•Site Count (for outdoor/macro case
scenarios)
•Indoor (for indoor scenarios)

Output parameters are automatically calculated by the tool, using necessary input parameters and their values can
not be changed by the user.
Input parameters (active) are necessary to be set by user accordingly to the simulation requirements.
Input parameters (inactive) are parameters that can not be changed in this moment due to the other parameters
values – for example switching some parameters to User defined (for example Deployment Class in Propagation
parameters’ group) will cause that group of inactive parameters (BTS Antenna Height, Average Penetration Loss,
etc.) will become active – user will be able to edit them.

Calculation Tabs – Traffic calculation
Traffic calculation panel allows to calculate the minimal required number of sites (for each of
phases separately) from capacity point of view, using configured traffic demand and the number of
subscribers.

Number of subscribers determines the number of all users in configured area – active
users, inactive users and users with switched off terminals.

Calculation Tabs – Equipment calculation
Equipment calculation panel enables to calculate the overall required number of sites (for each of
phases separately) taking into account coverage, traffic and baseband requirements.

Number of subscribers determines the number of all users in configured area – active users, inactive users
and users with switched off terminals – this parameter’s value is taken from traffic calculation panel.
Share of active users determines how many of the subscribers are active – both signaling and data radio
bearers are established and active.
