SOFTWARE
APPLICATION
REGRESSION ANALYSIS

Regression analysis is used when

predicting the behavior of a variable. The
regression equation explains the amount of
variations observable in the independent
variable x.
y = bx + a
Where y = dependent variable
x = independent variable
REGRESSION ANALYSIS
To get the regression equation, the values of a

and b are computed using the formula below.

EXAMPLE
The data in the table represent the memberships
at a university mathematics club during the past 5
years.
Number of years (x) Membership (y)
1 25
2 30
3 32
4 45
5 50

Form the equation of the form y = bx + a to

predict the membership 5 years from now.
Plot a scatter diagram for the data below. Then, use
regression analysis to predict the grade of a student
in math if his grade in English is:
A. 77 B. 98 C. 67 D. 90

English 85 82 79 85 85 90 85 84 74 81
Grade
(X)
Math 75 76 90 78 92 90 95 85 82 82
Grade (y)
1. x – Midterm grades y – Final grades
x 75 70 65 90 85 85 80 70 65 90
y 75 65 70 75 98 98 95 60 85 70
Predict the final grade of the student if his midterm
grade is:
A. 78 B. 89 C. 95 D. 68
2. x – Number of Absences y = Grades in English
x 1 2 2 3 3 8 6 1 4 5 5 1 2 1 9
y 90 85 80 75 80 65 70 95 80 80 75 92 89 80 65

Find y if: A. x = 12 B. x = 7 C. X = 0
