CRYSTTALINE SOLIDS
AND THEIR PROPERTIES
DEFINATION:
 The solids having repetitive arrangement
of atoms and molecules in a regular
formation.

The smallest repeating pattern of

crystalline solids is known as the unit
cell.
TYPES:
 There are four types of crystalline solids.

 Ionic solids
 Molecular solids
 Atomic solids
 Metallic solids
EXAMPLES:

 Ionic solid of NaCl

 Atomic solid of diamond
PROPERTIES:

 The crystalline solids exhibit regular

repeating structure represented by unit
cells.

 Crystalline solids also exhibit anisotropy.

 These are characterised by long range order.

 These solids usually show specific and sharp

melting points.

 The diffractions through crystals are found to

be very sharp.
  Crystalline solids exhibit cleavage.

 Crystalline solids are highly brittle.
