Data-at-Rest Encryption

© Copyright 2014 Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P. The information contained herein is subject to change without notice.
HP MSA 2040 - Data-at-Rest Encryption
• GL105 firmware introduces Full Disk Encryption (FDE) feature utilizing Self Encrypting Drives (SEDs)
• All or Nothing Simplicity
– To enable encryption, all disks in the system must be SEDs to avoid manageability issues for customers
• Local Key Management
– Keys established with user provided passphrase
– Lock Key storage in array, never leaves array
– Single Lock Key is maintained for entire system
• All encryption operations supported via CLI and SMU

27 © Copyright 2014 Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P. The information contained herein is subject to change without notice.
HP MSA 2040 - Data-at-Rest Encryption
Use Cases
• Theft
– Drive automatically locks when powered off
– Encrypted data is not accessible outside the array system
– Does not cover whole array system theft
• Drive Failure/Replacement
– No need for special handling of failed drives as data is secure – Lock key remains with array
• Repurpose/Disposition
– Encryption Keys can be changed making data encrypted with old key permanently inaccessible, providing a “quick erase” feature
• Transport
– Ability to secure system while in transport
– Ability to import Vdisk into secure system
• General Requirements
– Performance
• SEDs offer line rate encryption providing full drive performance which scales with addition of drives
– Data availability/loss
• Store multiple copies of Lock keys internal to array for import of encrypted disk sets
• Secure key management
– Keys will never be exposed to the customer, however, there is a reliance on physical security
– Keys implement AES-256 strength
28 © Copyright 2014 Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P. The information contained herein is subject to change without notice.
HP MSA 2040 - Data-at-Rest Encryption
Functional Use Cases
• Create initial passphrase/lock key
– User enters passphrase, lock key ID returned for future reference
• Secure the storage system with FDE
– Validates that all disks are FDE-capable and unsecured
– User enters current system passphrase for validation
• Change passphrase/lock key
– User enters current system passphrase for validation
– User enters new passphrase
– System returns lock key ID future reference
• Repurpose the storage system
– The repurpose command will not be executed if any Vdisks exist
– Cryptographic erase of user data
– System state becomes unsecured or unsecured/degraded on failure

29 © Copyright 2014 Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P. The information contained herein is subject to change without notice.
HP MSA 2040 - Data-at-Rest Encryption
Functional Use Cases (cont)
• Lock the system for transport
– The current passphrase will be required for confirmation if the system is secured
• Disk firmware update for FDE-capable disks
– The same capabilities as with non-FDE disks, using FTP or the WBI
• Display FDE status and lock key ID for each disk
– Show FDE status and lock key IDs for the system and disks
• Add a new disk to the secured system
– One or more disks have been inserted into empty slots
– For non-FDE-capable disks the system enters a secured degraded state
– For unsecured FDE-capable disks the disks become secured
– For secured disks whose lock keys don’t match the system, the disks are unusable until the passphrase under
which they were secured is provided. The system enters a secured degraded state.

30 © Copyright 2014 Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P. The information contained herein is subject to change without notice.
HP MSA 2040 - Data-at-Rest Encryption
Functional Use Cases (cont)
• Import foreign vdisk into a secured system
– The Vdisk to be imported must be FDE-capable
– If Vdisk was secured on a foreign system, the passphrase from that system must be provided with the “set
import-key” command
– Upon completion of import the Vdisk will be secured with current system pass-phrase
• Spare disk/Copyback
– Disk must be FDE-capable and secured
– Once secure, functionality is the same as unsecured systems
• Chassis replacement
– Encrypted Lock key is stored on midplane requiring passphrase to be entry to unlock secured system
• Initial power-on
– For FDE-secured systems, each disk is set to FDE available/secured/unlocked

31 © Copyright 2014 Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P. The information contained herein is subject to change without notice.
HP MSA 2040 - Data-at-Rest Encryption
Functional Use Cases (cont)
• Repurpose
– Cryptographic erase of one or more disks for repurposing - All data is lost
– Once repurposed secured system will secure the disk with current system lock key
– If system is not secured the drive will remain unlocked

32 © Copyright 2014 Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P. The information contained herein is subject to change without notice.
HP MSA 2040 - Data-at-Rest Encryption
CLI commands
• set fde-import-key
– Sets or changes the import lock key for the use of Full Disk Encryption. The import lock key is derived from the passphrase
and is used to unlock secured disks that are inserted into the system from a different secure system.
• clear fde-keys
– Removes the lock keys used with Full Disk Encryption.
• set fde-lock-key
– Sets or changes the lock key for the use of Full Disk Encryption. The lock key is derived from the passphrase and stored within
the system.
– The customer should retain the value of the passphrase and the lock key ID that is returned by the command.
• set fde-state
– Changes the overall state of the system for the use of Full Disk Encryption. The system can be secured, where each disk
becomes secured and not accessible outside the system. Alternatively, the system can be repurposed, where each disk is secure
erased.
• show fde-state
– Shows Full Disk Encryption information for the storage system
