FAMILY
• A predominant unit in the society
• Plays an important role in the upbringing of individual
• Mr Bennet
– Loves book but neglect his responsible.
– Pick sides (care about Elizabeth)
– "unless you truly esteemed your husband … your lively talents would place you in the greatest
danger in an unequal marriage. You could scarcely escape discredit and misery" (59.36).

• Mrs Bennet
– Mrs Bannet solely focus on getting husband for her daughters
– “The business of her life was to get her daughters married.”
STATUS
• Austen clearly distinguish 2 kind of classes in the family
– Upper class (Darcy and Bingsley)
– Middle class (Bennet)
• Example
– Mr Collins who spend most of his life serving his upper patron (Lady Catherine)
– Mr. Darcy who believes in the dignity of his lineage
– Miss Bingsley who dislike anyone who is not socially accepted as she is
– Mr Wickham who try as hard as he could to get enough money to raise himself into the higher status
– Lady Catherin who oppose the marriage between Darcy and Elizabeth
