OBJECTIVES:

• Identify interjections;
• Define interjections;
• Give examples of sentences using interjections
appropriately; and
• Use interjections in sentences.
WHAT ARE INTERJECTIONS?

• Interjections are words that show


emotions.
• They are not grammatically related to the
sentence.
• You’ll often see them used to convey
surprise (both good surprises and bad
ones) or excitement.

A LOT!
EXAMPLES:
Interjection Function
Conveys dislike or disgust
Eww !
Can mean you're thinking or hesitating
Hmm …
An expression used to get someone's attention
Yoo-hoo …
It means silence
Shhhhh!
Expresses victory or celebration
Hurray!
Expresses amazement and surprise
Wow!
Demonstrates a very strong affirmation or approval
Yeah!
Ah. Expresses pleasure, realization and surprise

Interjection in a sentence:

YIKES! I ALMOST GOT HIT BY A WOW! THANKS FOR THE


FIRECRACKER! SURPRISE BIRTHDAY
PARTY!
Interjection in a sentence:
1. Eww! The drink tastes so bad.
2. Hmm, that's really strange.
3. Yoo-hoo, are you there?
4. Shhhh! Keep quiet or else we might get caught.
5. Hurray! We won the game.
6. Wow! That’s a good idea for the business.
7. Yeah, the examination is scheduled tomorrow.
8. Ah, now I understand the argument.
• You can use an interjection before or after
a sentence that explains what’s going on.

• You can also use an interjection alone, although


it may not make sense if you haven’t described
the situation.

• Interjections often use exclamation points, but


they don’t necessarily have to.

• In writing a sentence with interjections make


sure to use parentheses or commas.

POINTS TO CONSIDER:
• Make sure that you are using the interjection
properly.

• Interjections are fine to use in casual and


informal writing.

• Avoid using interjections in formal writing.
