Malaria is a serious and sometimes fatal disease caused
by a parasite that commonly infects a certain type of
mosquito which feeds on humans. People who get
malaria are typically very sick with high fevers,
shaking chills, and flu-like illness. It then travels in the
bloodstream and infects and destroys red blood cells
which causes death. Death is usually due to lack of
available treatment or access to treatment. P.
falciparum tends to be the species causing the most
complications and has a high mortality if untreated.
Cerebral malaria, a complication of P. falciparum
malaria, has a 20% mortality rate even if treated.
