COURTYARD EFFECT (COOLING
EFFECT)

In order to achieve the cooling

effect the courtyard was kept
sufficiently deep compared to the
height of surrounded walls to
ensure that base of the courtyard
remained in the shade for most if
not all of the day.

If the courtyard was either too

large or walls too low the cool
air sinks effect are not
achieved.
NATURAL VENTILATION

Lahore has a hot semi

arid climate. Summers
are long and extremely
hot and winters are dry
and cool. The area also
experiences a monsoon
and dust storms.

STACK EFFECT
Stack ventilation uses temperature
differences to move air. Hot air rises because
it is lower pressure. For this reason, it is
sometimes called buoyancy ventilation.

WOOD

Brick was used by Mughal emperor Akbar to build the city wall of Lahore
fort houses havelis and brick paved streets. Builders faced the brickwork
with colorful tiles by taking inspiration from Persian customs. By sixteenth
century colored tiles are not commonly used for houses and tombs. That
time brick was decorative manner to break plainness of the wall. A very
first Lakhauri brick was used with lime plaster.
