AND P.E.)

NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION
 I will always make sure I am meeting the student ahead of time (hopefully), and instruct them of how I
run my classes, rules, and other things that are needed to know. (Both Health & Wellness and PE)
 I will have a packet for new students to use and go through (same packets that students are given at the
beginning of the school year) that include;
 Classroom rules
 A list of required slips if needed
 School maps
 List of emergency codes and procedures
 My contact information

I will make sure my students know my expectations when it comes to new students, being respectful,
welcoming, patient, and kind.
In PE, my new student will meet with me prior, so I can set them up with a gym locker and explain classroom
rules and expectations as well.
THE ANGRY STUDENT
 I will stay clam and remain in control throughout all situations.

 I will be understanding.

 In a secondary setting, I will have expectations that students will not act out in anger, however if this does happen, I will ask students to breathe– and
remove themselves if needed.
 If I have students in the secondary setting who have emotional issues and this is a common occurrence, the student and I will create a ”calm down”
plan that we can utilize whenever these situations occur.
 I will be professional.
 Analyze the situation
 Give the student time to calm down

 I will talk to the student.

 I will communicate effectively.

 Take emotions out of conversation.

 I will make use of body language.

 I will not use procedures for ‘time-outs’, instead make sure students understand consequences of these behaviors.
THE DEATH OF A STUDENT
 Be flexible with curriculum/lesson plans.

 I will let the students talk and understand one another.

 Make sure students have the time to grieve– alone or together.

 I will take care of myself.

 I will be sensitive to:

 Cultural differences
 Treat all students the same

 I will be observant of how students are responding to the tragedy.

 Grades dropping
 Skipping classes, etc.

Closure is needed, I will achieve that with time as well as eventually guide my classes back to their
normal routine.
THE DEATH OF A PARENT

 Similar procedures as death of a student.

 Be flexible with lesson plans, allowing students to talk, give students time to GRIEVE, be
observant of students.
 I will be continually emotionally strong for myself and my students.
SUBSTITUTE TEACHER HANDBOOK
 When I am gone, I will leave a substitute folder with all the following;
 Welcome letter: thanking the sub and emphasizing that the students must follow daily routines and
LISTEN ACCORDINGLY.
 Attendance sheet (seating chart if needed) as well as directions with what to do with the attendance sheet
after it is taken.
 Information about students and different classes such as; behavior issues, those who need to monitored
closer, certain students leaving and different times for specific occasions, etc.
 My daily schedule (where and when to be places)
 Lesson plans with handouts if necessary (or which equipment is needed for PE)
 List of my classroom rules and procedures
 My contact information
 An area for notes to be left by the substitute about things that went good/bad, specific students, etc.
A TEACHER AIDE
 I will always have a teacher aide notebook that includes;
 Overall responsibilities and expectations for supervising the students
 Classroom schedules, procedures, rules
 Attendance sheets

I will hold regular meetings to ensure things are going smoothly, and so that a good relationship can be formed between us!

In PE, I will use aides as another set of eyes to monitor activity and make sure students are staying on tasks-- especially if we
are using more than one gym/field.
PARENT-VOLUNTEERS

 In a secondary environment, I will most likely not be using parent-volunteers.

CLASSROOM VISITORS

 If we have guest speakers in either Health & Wellness or PE…

 I will introduce and welcome our visitor.
 I will make sure the guest is understanding of what we are learning and ways they can relate to my
classes.
 Distribute newsletters with reflection areas that students will fill out once the class is nearing the end.
 I will ask students questions and well as the guest.

I expect students to treat our guest with respect and kindness– giving them their total attention and treating
their presence as a gift!
PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES
 Preparation = production of successful meetings

 Plan and prepare

 Content that is being taught
 Tests, projects, units/activities (PE), that went into making the average grade for the period
 Upcoming content
 Upcoming projects, activities, units, etc.

 Always greet parents with a welcoming smile and handshake.

 I will prepare sign-in cards for parents as well as take notes for each individual conference.

 I will print grades, so parents are able to see progress of their child and why their child is struggling,
excelling, etc.
 I will use a timer to make sure conferences are running on schedule.

 Ask for suggestions and any questions

 I will follow up with all of those parents who attended conferences.

BACK-TO-SCHOOL NIGHT
 If these still occur in the secondary setting…

 I will be dressed for success or dress to fit my role (PE teacher).

 I will constantly be greeting parents and making everyone feel welcomed.

 I will be prepared for any question about the school year that will be thrown my way.

 I will have a general list of talking points.

 Provide contact information as well as important information for the class and school year.

 “Any questions?”

 I will always thank the parents for their time.

HOME & SCHOOL CONNECTION

 I will keep an updated class/personal website (may be Schoology or other school media content)
that contains;
 Lessons
 Homework assignments
 Resources/useful links
 Important dates
In the secondary environment, this will be available to students mainly.

I will try my best to provide a weekly or monthly newsletter about all that is happening within my classes.

I will provide my contact information.

TECHNOLOGY IN THE CLASSROOM

 I will not tolerate technology of any sort in my PE classes.

 Unless it is a Fitbit during units where we are tracking different readings such as heartrates, VO2’s, steps, etc.

 In my Health & Wellness classes, I will inform students ahead of times when they may use their
computers for assignments, projects, etc.
 Students will also understand that I would like them to take paper notes instead of notes on the computer,
phones will also not be tolerated unless told so.
