HOW TO STUDY THE BIBLE INDUCTIVELY

The INDUCTIVE Method:

Investing TIME

Exercising DISCIPLINE

Employing a METHOD
INDUCTION is the process of considering a
succession of observed facts and their relationship
to each other, and drawing from them a general
conclusion.
Biblical Passages
Romans 3: 21-26

Ephesians 2: 8-10

Genesis 15: 6

Titus 3: 4-7
Romans 3: 21-26
But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, alth
ough the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— the righteousness of God

Genesis 15: 6
Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness.

Titus 3: 4-7

4But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, 5 he saved us,
not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He
saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, 6whom
he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7so that,
having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of
eternal life.
Biblical Passages Induction
Romans 3: 21-26 We are save by GOD’S grace
through FAITH alone. Good
Ephesians 2: 8-10
works result from the faith that
Genesis 15: 6 justifies a person.
Titus 3: 4-7 DOCTRINE: Justification by
FAITH

The DEDUCTIVE approach, on the other hand,

employs a process of applying what is already known
as a general proposition (derived earlier through the
induction) to a new or unknown situation.

Philippians 2: 12,13

12Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in

my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work
out your own salvation with fear and trembling;

13for it is God who works in you both to will and to

do for His good pleasure.
His words in Isaiah 66:2 indicate: “To this one I will look, to him who is humble and contrite of
spirit, and who trembles at My word.”
An important Old Testament truth is “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom” (Ps. 111:10;

What does it mean to work
out your own salvation
with fear and trembling;
James 2: 18-26
Deduction
Is james contradicting himself
here?
 18But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.”
Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show
you my faith by my works. 19You believe that God is one;
you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder! 20Do
you want to be shown, you foolish person, that faith apart
from works is useless? 21Was not Abraham our father
justified by works when he offered up his son Isaac on the
altar? 22You see that faith was active along with his works,
and faith was completed by his works; 23and the Scripture
was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was
counted to him as righteousness”—and he was called
a friend of God. 24You see that a person is justified by
works and not by faith alone. 25And in the same way was
not also Rahab the prostitute justified by works when she
received the messengers and sent them out by another
way? 26For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also
faith apart from works is dead.
Three Basic Steps to the Inductive Method
 1. OBSERVE
 To observe means to note and give full attention to
both explicit and implicit data. This means to see data
not as isolated facts but as facts related to one another.
 -people
 -places
- action
-reaction
- motives
-statements
- comments
Three Basic Steps to the Inductive Method

 2. INTERPRET
 There are 2 levels of understanding:
 -What the message means to the original
hearers
 - What it may mean for us readers today
Three Basic Steps to the Inductive Method

 3. APPLY
 To apply means to act on what the passage
has taught us personally or corporately
Let’s apply what we learned
 Matthew 28:19
 -Romans 8:26
 -1 Cor. 12:11
 -Ephesians 4:30
 -Acts 5: 3, 4
 Hebrews 10:29
HOW TO STUDY NARRATIVES
 What is a narrative?
It is a story.
 Narratives present truth through dialogues and action between
God and people, and between people and other people.

 *setting (tagpo)
 *plot (balangkas)
 *action (pangyayari)
 *consequences (bunga o resulta)
HOW TO STUDY NARRATIVES
 OBSERVATION
We have to study the context. (nilalaman)

 1. historical and cultural period when the event

occurred
 2. events immediately before or after
 the chapter before and after it
 *explicit facts (open, clearly stated)
 *implicit facts (hidden or implied)
