Trip/Monthly Activity Reports
Speeding A
The Speeding A condition is met when the vehicle is traveling between the Speeding A and
the Speeding B values (default thresholds are 66 mph and 71 mph).
Speeding B
The Speeding B conditions is met when the vehicle is traveling above Speeding B (default
threshold of 71 mph).
Coasting Time
The condition when Vehicle Speed is greater than 40 mph and Engine Speed is less than
40% of maximum rated RPM. Is the vehicle in gear?
Predictive Cruise Control
This is a fuel saving feature which uses GPS and adjusts cruise speed to the profile of the road
in advance . This is different from Adaptive Cruise which looks a object in front of you and
adjusts the cruise speed accordingly. This is more of a safety feature.

Idle time – Real Numbers
So we can see that most of the vehicle time was spent on the VSG governor. The stop idle section simply is there to tell
us that most the idle time (whether regular or VSG) was accumulated in chunks of time greater than 5minutes.
Definition of Idle %
Total idle time divided by total trip time, in this case: 127:07:26 / 438:25:37 or 29%

Engine Utilization
Trip Time divided by Trip Calendar Time. This should always be the larger number.
Vehicle Utilization
Driving Time divided by Trip Calendar Time.
DPF Regeneration
Parked Completed
The number of times the regeneration cycle has been completed when initiated by a driver
or technician while the vehicle is parked.
Driving Completed
The number of times the DPF regeneration cycle has been completed when automatically
initiated while the vehicle is still moving.

As the complexity of the vehicle computer systems continues to evolve, efforts are
ongoing to maximize the self-monitoring features and to minimize the interactive
requirements of technicians and drivers. One of these improvements applies to the
data capture feature of the DDEC system relative to the key cycles. The chart below
explains this.

Filename Breakdown
• The first 5 numbers reflect the date the file was created: mm-dd-y.
• The sixth character (it may be a number or a letter) is the PC identifier code that
was entered when DDDL/DDEC Reports was installed.
• The 7th and 8th characters represent the extraction order for that day. The first
file extracted would be “AA”, the next “AB”, and so on.
• An XTR file extension comes from a DDEC IV / V / VI or MBE VCU module. A
DHP extension file comes from a DDEC III.

Viewing Data files
The Vehicle Extraction Password allows you to password-protect your vehicles so that
trip data cannot be extracted or cleared by an unauthorized service location. Once a
password is setup via the vehicle details, it is stored in the program’s registry and then
written to the CPC during the next extraction. A Password Set message will be
displayed confirming the change after the extraction completes.
Image #1 Image #2
In order to set this up, select the Change Management Password from the Tools
menu within the Vehicle Registry panel. If this is the first password, then you will
just need to complete the New Password and Confirm New Password fields. Click
OK to confirm.
You can reset your Management password by typing the current password into the
Old password and typing a new one into the fields provided. If you wish to clear all
passwords for this feature, simply type in your current password in the Old Password
field and click on the Clear Old Password button. You can now re-enter a new
password. If you forget your password, contact our Customer Support Desk to have
this reset.
NOTE: When setting up a new password, DDEC Reports must be restarted for the
password protection to be recognized.

DDEC III
1) The DDEC III modules are not equipped with a backup clock battery so if you pull power to this
controller and reapply it at a later time, there will be a gap in the trip time.
2) December 31, 1984 was the default date in all DDECIII modules. If you never extracted and
reset the date, this date would remain on all reports. Additionally, if you replaced one of these
modules, you would have to reprogram and extract to sync up the date. It was always
recommended that an extraction be done before a truck was placed into service.
3) You will not be able to extract trip data from a DDEC III unless Data Pages has been turned
on. However, even before this occurs, data is being accumulated.
Daimler Trucks
DDEC IV
1) The DDEC IV modules are equipped with a backup clock battery, which had a life span of 10
years. Date and time were factory set so this stamp would remain current.
2) If the battery goes bad and you pull power to this controller and reapply it at a later time, there
will be a gap in the time keeping; just like the DDEC III ECM.
4) In 2011, we discovered a problem where the dates in DDECIVs jumped around. The problem
stemmed from the modules firmware version R32.x, 33.x which affected the RTC (real time
clock). Essentially, the firmware could not handle any year ending in “00”. This was fixed with
a subsequent release of R39.03.
Daimler Trucks
General Points of Interest
1) When installing any Detroit Diesel software application, you must have full administrator access. Attempting to install
software as an administrator under a shop ID will most likely result in installation errors.
2) The internal battery is only used for the clock, NOT DATA. If un-switched power is cut to the ECM and the internal battery is
no longer working properly, a date/time stamp cannot be written to the ECM. Clock drift will occur no matter what.
3) Controllers keep track of date and time based on GMT. Configuration page shows Fleet Time Zone as (-5h) or (EST)
4) As data is being accumulated during a trip, it is written to EEPROM (non-volatile memory) at regular intervals (every 15
minute minutes). When the vehicle is turned off, data begins writing to EEPROM immediately and takes approximately 15-
20 seconds to complete.
5) If power is cut or interrupted during the data-writing sequence, more than likely data will be lost.
6) With switch power (ignition switch) data can still be written to an ECM even if the internal battery is dead or removed. There
are fault codes for RTC (real time clock) battery high and low conditions and these would most likely be shown in DDDL -
not DDEC Reports.
7) If there is a significant difference in the accumulation of data, especially during a trip, the ECM could have been switched
with another one.
8) Total parked Regen Fuel – all that occurs during regen when switch is activated. Driving regen = dosing fuel
9) DDEC III ECMs are not equipped with backup clock batteries so if you pull power, the accumulation of time will discontinue
until power is restored.

Performing Data Extractions with DDEC
Reports
Before attempting to extract with DDEC Reports please:
• Verify that you are going to extract from one of the following modules:
A DDEC III (with the Data Pages option enabled)
An MBE VCU with at least 12.09 software
A DDEC IV or V
A DDEC VI & DDEC 10 CPC
• It is important that the PC be started prior to connecting to the vehicle and
turning on the ignition. Failure to follow this sequence could lead to
communications errors.
• Verify that your hardware is properly connected to the vehicle’s diagnostic
connector prior to turning the ignition in the “ON” position.

Fields
Daimler Trucks
In order to successfully extract data, the vehicle ID must be recognized in the control module (DDEC ECM) and must be listed in the
Vehicle Registry. If neither of these conditions exist, then the Unknown Vehicle ID panel will be displayed prompting you to add the
Vehicle ID in the Add/Assign Vehicle ID field using one of three methods.
1) Select Vehicle ID from the IDs on Vehicle Field
2) Select Vehicle ID from the Unassigned IDs in Registry Field
3) Type in the correct Vehicle ID in the Add/Assign Vehicle ID Field
Once the Vehicle ID has been assigned and you click OK, the extraction process will begin.
NOTE: If you don’t assign a vehicle ID within 30 seconds, the extraction will automatically be cancelled.

APPENDIX C
FUEL ECONOMY ANALYSIS
Daimler Trucks
General Considerations Regarding Fuel Economy
Valid comparisons must take place between similar vehicles under similar circumstances. Among
the factors that must be taken into consideration are:
Duty Cycle
Time of Year
Age of the Engine
Geographic Location
Driver habits
Daimler Trucks
Here are Trip Activity Reports for two vehicles from the same fleet. We’ve highlighted key data that greatly influence
fuel economy.
The quick index is simply a fast check of key fuel economy factors. Here we’ve simply taken the data from the
reports on the previous two pages and put them into a spreadsheet. This analysis shows that Vehicle 156 is getting
the best overall fuel economy based on the four factors we’ve targeted; Average Drive Load, Average Vehicle
Speed, Idle Percent and Vehicle Speed Limiting. Also notice that there is a direct correlation between the total of
these factors and fuel economy.
You could do more detailed analysis by providing relative weights to the factors and include some other things
too but normally the quick index provides the insight you need.
Daimler Trucks
The Speed / RPM and Load / RPM reports
offer another opportunity to analyze
whether a vehicle is being driven in the
most efficient manner. Drivers staying in
the peak torque bands, below 1500 RPMs,
will generally get better fuel economy.
The vehicle and engine speed / RPM
histograms pictured here show a
comparison between optimum RPM ranges
(top two graphs) and RPM ranges that
contribute to lower fuel economy numbers
(bottom two graphs). Note the time in the
speed bands over 1500 RPM.

Factors that can Distort ECM Data
• Correct ECM Parameters
• No Standardization, ie: avg mph, % idle or Top Gear
• Tires
• ECM Accuracy and Injector Efficiency
• Like Drivelines / Ratings / Model Year / SW
• Amount of Vehicles
• Seasonal Affects
• Break In (Group Mileages-25,000?)
Daimler Trucks
Intangibles- Climate and Weather
• Ambient Temperature:
• 2% with every 10 degrees of ambient air.
• Winter Conditions:
• Winter fuel, longer warm-up periods and increased idle
time.
• Increased drag due to more moisture and wind. In
general, higher air density will decrease fuel economy
because the vehicle needs to work harder to move.
• Summer Conditions:
• Air conditioning, idle time.
Daimler Trucks
Route Effects
• Stopping costs .2 to .3 gallons of fuel, including
getting back up to speed.
• Route Effects (brakes per mile):
• Flat Interstate Hwy vs. Flat 2-Lane Hwy
• Flat Interstate Hwy vs. Mountainous Interstate
• Flat Interstate Hwy vs. Suburban Route w/ Stop/Go
• Flat Interstate Hwy vs. Urban Route w/ 100% Stop/Go
