RESPIRATORY SYSTEM OF THE DOG
The respiratory system in dogs is
composed of different elements recognized as
main and accessories. These structures work
synchronously and in an organized manner,
allowing the basic respiratory mechanism of
the species.

The fundamental purpose of the respiratory

system is the gaseous exchange of air with the
tissues and the transport of carbon dioxide to
the outside of the organism. It also influences
the regulation of its temperature, the
metabolism of some elements and the
protection against inhaled harmful substances.
The ventilation, entry and exit of air into the lungs, allows the exchange of
oxygen and carbon dioxide, so that all tissues support adequate oxygenation.
This exchange occurs in two phases, inhalation and exhalation.

Inhalation is an active phase, in which the diaphragm and intercostal muscles

contract to fill the entire respiratory tract with air. Exhalation is a passive
process, although it can be forced, due to the lungs and the rib cage.
ESSENTIAL AND AUXILIARY PARTS OF THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM IN
DOGS

The structures that make up the respiratory system are:

NOSE
In the dog and other domestic species, the
outer portion of the nose is fused with the
contours of the snout.

NASAL CAVITY
Internally, the mucosa covers the walls of each
cavity or nostril.

SINUSES
The bones that delimit the nasal cavity are
thickened by air spaces called paranasal
sinuses (maxillary and frontal in the dog).
TRACHE AND BRONCHES
LARYNX
The trachea and bronchi are composed of
