What is Python?

• Python is a powerful high level, general-purpose,

object-oriented programming language

• It was created and released by Guido Van Rossum in

the early 90s

• Python is an interpreted language that uses an

interpreter to execute statements of code one by one

Downloading the setup file
• The python setup file can be downloaded from the
official site: https://www.python.org/downloads/

• All the versions of python are available for download in


the official site. It is recommended to download the
latest release of the software.
Installing Python
• Once the download is complete double-click the ‘.exe’
file to open the installation window.

• In the installation window, check the ‘Add Python to


Path’ option and then click ‘Install Now’
Installing Python
• Once the installation is completed, the same
can be verified by doing the following steps:
– Open command prompt
– Type python --version in the command prompt as
shown below. This will display the python version.
Python IDEs
• IDE stands for Integrated Develop Environment
which is nothing but a GUI where programmers
write and execute their code.
• A number of IDEs are available for python. Some
of the widely used IDEs are listed as follows:
– IDLE (default)
– Spyder
– Pycharm
– Jupyter Notebook
– Sublime Text 3

• In addition to this, a number of online compilers
are available for python

Installing packages
• The supporting packages for python can be
installed using pip
• The pip package is installed as default along
with the python software
• To install a new package, open the command
prompt and type pip install package_name
Example: pip install numpy

Note: You have to stay connected to the internet to


install packages
