What is gait ?

Gait refers to locomotion achieved through the

movement of human limbs.
Gait is, quite simply, the pattern of how a person
walks. Medical professionals can tell a lot about a
person's health from their gait, including if they have
neurologic, muscular, or skeletal problems.
Gait cycle

A gait cycle is the time period or sequence of

events or movements during locomotion in which one
foot contacts the ground to when that same foot again
contacts the ground.
It has 2 phases ; stance and swing phase.
 Stance phase accounts for approximately 60
percent, and swing phase for approximately 40
percent, of a single gait cycle.
Gait analysis

 Gait analysis is the systematic study of

locomotion.
 More specifically, the study of human motion,
using the eye and the brain of observers,
augmented by instrumentation for measuring body
movements, body mechanics, and the activity of
the muscles.
 Gait analysis is used to assess and treat individuals
with conditions affecting their ability to walk.
Gait analysis
laboratory
 Gait Analysis Laboratory is one of a
few select clinical motion analysis
labs which includes facility for the
collection, analysis, and interpretation
of human movement data on
individuals of all ages with
orthopedic, rheumatic, and
neurological diagnoses.

 The gait analysis laboratory provide gait training with

parallel bars and treadmill.
 The modern Gait and Motion Analysis Laboratory uses
state-of-the-art computer technology to capture a 3-D image
of a individual’s walk.
 Electrodes and reflective markers that are placed on the
person to measure muscle activity and track motion of body
segments. Foot pressure and energy use are also measured.
 This data, along with a physical examination, can help the
team identify specific ways to help improve the individual
ability to walk, step and run.

Importance of gait lab in assessing
gait deviations in TTP.
 Gait analysis laboratories play an important role in assessing gait deviations in transtibial
Prosthesis.
 Many of the people with transtibial amputation using prosthesis have gait problem . It is
necessary to have a gait laboratory setup in order to rule out the gait deviations of
Transtibial prosthesis.
Pressure scanner

 This pressure mapping technology captures plantar pressure

data from heel contact to toe off and provides objective,
quantifiable data.
 This technology would be very beneficial in order to
analyze the pressure on prosthetic foot.
 This would help in diagnosing the gait deviations like wide
base gait as it detects the pressure on medial side of foot
 This technology would help in assessing vaulting gait.
3D imaging
 3D gait analysis which uses
motion capture systems to
track the movement of the
lower limbs.
 3-D gait analysis measures,
with a high degree of
accuracy, the kinematics of
the joints in the lower limb
and facilitates the
interpretation of kinematic
deviations.
Parallel bars.
 Parallel bars not only aids in
patient walk but it also helps
in diagnosing gait deviations
with naked eyes as well as
with 3D scanners.
 It helps in diagnosing gait
deviations in frontal and
sagittal planes.
 It is very beneficial in
diagnosing general deviations
like circumduction and wide
walking base.
