Metatarsalgia:
Metatarsalgia is a general term used to denote a painful foot condition
in the metatarsal region of the foot .This is a common foot disorder
that can affect the bones and joints at the ball of foot.

Ball of Foot:
The ball of the foot is the padded portion of the sole between the toes
and the arch, underneath the heads of the metatarsal bones.

Causes:
 Hereditary
 Skin irritation
 Foot disorder
 Over load feet
 Nerve disorder
 Inappropriate footwear

Signs and Symptoms:

 Sharp, aching or burning pain in the ball of your foot.
 Pain that worsens when you stand, run, flex your feet or walk
especially barefoot on a hard surface and improves when you
rest.
 Sharp or shooting pain, numbness, or tingling in your toes
 Sensation as walking on a stone or marble.

Diagnosis:
The diagnosis of Morton's neuroma can be checked by physical
examination. Xray are also taken in order to evaluate the presence of
additional pathology .

Treatment :
The initial therapies are non-surgical end relatively simple. They can
involve one or more of the following treatments ;
 Foot freedom: avoid heels or tight shoes and wear wider shoots
with lower heels and with soft sole .
 Orthoses; the goal of orthotic therapy is to transfer forces away
from the painful metatarsal heads and provide accommodation
and cushioning for localized areas, since increased GRF under
one or more metatarsal heads can increase metatarsal pain.
Metatarsal pad are commonly recommended that releases the
pressure on metatarsal .

 Medication; nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medication such as

ibuprofen or sulindac may prescribed . Rarely injections of
corticosteroid are used to treat this pathology.
 Surgical treatment; if it is associated with morton’s neuroma
neurectomy is performed . surgical option with other type of
metatarsalgia include reshaping of joint and modifying irregularly
shaped bones.
