Introduction
users. to stance
control
Stance control KAFO are developed to prevent knee
flexion during stance phase and permit free knee
KAFO
motion during swing phase of gait.

The use of KAFO with drop locked knee joints

produces some limitations for walking causes patients
to ambulate with gait deviations.

The development of stance control orthoses

can potentially improve their functionality.
A stance control knee joint First developed in
1989 by Nils VanLeedam, PhD, of the
Netherlands. Background:
Conventional KAFOs provide stability during
walking by locking the knee joint in a fully
extended position during both stance and swing
phases.

Walking with conventional KAFOs lead to

limited mobility, pain, and a decreased range of
motion (ROM) in lower limb joints.

Stance Control enable the user to freely swing

his leg in the swing phase but are locked for the
stance phase, giving the user the same degree
of security as lockedKAFO.
