• About 180,000 live in the US, across 22 states

• Most are trilingual


• Pennsylvania Dutch (German dialect) at home
• High German at their worship services
• English when they deal with non-Amish

• They believe God has kept them together despite pressure to change from
the modern world

• They believe in non-violence, have their own school system & don’t vote -
BUT they still pay tax 
