SOCIAL MEDIA,
SOURCE CRITICISM!

"They will say anything

to get a good headline."
What are fake
news?
Fake news are
announcements that
spread false information
and they are fabrications of
events.

In today's society, information

is so easily available through
social media which increases
the probability of finding false
information.

It can be hard to distiguinsh between the real

news and what is made up, that's why you have
to be source critical when you're reading
information online.
The bad side of
fake news...
When it comes to the negative aspects of
fake news, they can be misleading and
create uncertainty in our society. When so
much false information is spread people
become obnoxious about the real events.

For example, the conspiracy about

the flatness of the earth has such a
hold on society, since it is so easy to
convey your opinions.

However...
There are some positive aspects to fake news. It
can motivate people to be more source critical as
they have to tell the difference between what is
real and what is not.

We personally believe,
that it is possible to use social media
responsibly. We suggest you always double
check your sources, and always make sure
you aren't sharing misleading information.
EXPLORING
SOCIAL MEDIA’S IMPACT

WITH POLITICS
DOES SOCIAL
MEDIA AFFECT POLITICS?
Yes. In fact...
A communication medium like social media can be
highly influential in shaping political perspectives due
to the wealth of ideas, thoughts, and opinions that
constantly circulate within its ecosystem, making it
persuasive in altering or impacting individuals'
viewpoints.
HOW CAN WE PROMOTE DEMOCRACY
ON SOCIAL MEDIA?
Social media is a big part of our lives today and it is an
important way to spread political thoughts and express
opinions and values. However citizens, especially teenagers,
should be aware of how politicians use them: do they use
social media to promote their activities or are they just a threat
to Democracy?

Have you ever taken into consideration the negative impact

that social media might have on your thoughts? We are
known to be really influenced by what we see online and thats
why some politicians might take advantage of that. Most times
they use aggressive expressions in exaggerated or even
discriminatory campaigns, for example against black and
LGBTQ+ communities on Twitter.

Apart from this, social media is still a great way to raise

awareness on worldwide topics and issues. “If it hadn’t been for
the social media impact, actions to help refugees in Greece
would have never been possible”, said Ms Ingglezi, a Greek
politician.

We believe that a correct use of social media is the key for an

active citizenship. There should be someone who filters the
information published on social media, as well as an
international regulation which will both keep democracy alive.
As an example...

Social media can and will

influence the population into
wrong beliefs, therefore, we
have to use them in the most
conscious way, to avoid the
spread of hatred.

The best thing to do is to ignore people who try to spread

approval (ex. politicians); ,Everybody should think with their

Social media has transformed the way we communicate,

share information, and connect with the world. While it
offers numerous benefits, from fostering global awareness
to mobilizing social and environmental movements, it also
exerts a significant influence on sustainability.

"If you don’t take corrective action now, you will

have to tell us where you have been keeping all of
your scientific research to relocate you and your
families to the planet Mars or Pluto."

Awareness and Advocacy: Social

media platforms provide a global
stage for environmental and
sustainability causes.

Sustainability information is
readily available on social media,
making it accessible to a wide
audience.

Movements like #ClimateStrike and

#PlasticFree have gained
momentum through these
platforms.
From informative infographics to
video tutorials, social media educates
people about eco-friendly practices,
renewable energy, and conservation
efforts.
SUSTAINABILITY AND SOCIAL MEDIA

Greenwashing: Some businesses

exploit social media to create a false
image of sustainability.
Overconsumption and Fast Fashion:
Social media's influence on consumer
culture often perpetuates a desire for
constant novelty.
Digital Waste: The energy and
resource consumption of data
centers that power social media are
often overlooked.

Influencers and trends

can encourage impulsive
to do better.

"We can make decisive gains for

people and planet if we set our mind,
our money, and our politics to it."

Social media's impact on sustainability is a double-edged

sword. It empowers individuals and organizations to
advocate for positive change, educates the public about
sustainability, and facilitates innovative solutions. We
must remain critical consumers of information and
continue to advocate for sustainable practices both online
and offline. The responsible use of these powerful
platforms can contribute to a more sustainable future.
