AGREEMENT RULES
1. Subject and Verb must AGREE with one another in number
(singular or plural).

Singular Subject=Singular Verb Plural Subject=Plural Verb

dog + barks dogs + bark

The dog barks at the stranger.

The dogs bark at the stranger.
2.1. With the number of ______, use a singular verb.

The number of volunteers grows each year.

2.2. With a number of _______, use plural verb.

A number of people grow tomatoes every summer.

3. A phrase or clause between subject and verb does
not change the number of the subject.

A can of lima beans sits on the shelf.

The women who went to the meeting were bored.
Mrs. Reyes, together with her sisters, joins the
parade.
4. When sentences start with “there” or “here”,
the subject will always be placed after the verb,
so care to be taken to identify it correctly.
