THE NATURE OF

FACILITIES
PLANNING
Facility Planning determines how an activity’s
tangible fixed assets best support achieving the
activity’s objectives.

• Examples:
• A.In manufacturing, the objective is to support the
production.
• B.In an airport, the objective is to support the
passenger airplane interface.
• C.In a hospital, the objective is to provide medical
care to patients.
Facility
• Facilities
can be broadly defined as buildings
where people, material, and machined come
together for stated purpose – typically to make
a tangible product or provide a service.
• First
and foremost facility planning engages in supervising
the planning, programming, designing, construction
approach, operation and maintenance of facilities to make
possible the achievement of the organizational goals.
• Officebuildings, schools, universities, daycare centers,
healthcare institutions, ministries, airports and universities
are familiar examples of facilities.
• Thereare specialized facilities like hotels, resorts
and other F&B establishments that need a detailed
understanding of the internal workflows.
• This comprehensive knowledge of the internal
workflows is necessary so that are allocations for
different internal departments like housekeeping,
stewarding, room service, banqueting, stores and
other areas can be optimized in the existing
operational areas with no trade-off between function
and deliverables.
