Palm Sunday – Bible Passage

(Matthew 21: 1-11)
Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King
As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the
Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go to the
village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there,
with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone
says anything to you, say that the Lord needs them, and he will send
them right away.”
The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. They Palm Sunday
brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for
Jesus to sit on. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, This is the Sunday before Easter Sunday. It is the first

shouted,

When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and crosses made from palm leaves, as a reminder of Jesus'
asked, “Who is this?”
The crowds answered, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in
entrance into Jerusalem and his death on the cross. Some
Galilee.” Christians keep these in their homes all year as a symbol
of their faith.

Maundy Thursday
This is the Thursday before Easter Day. On Maundy Thursday, Christians remember when Jesus shared the Passover
meal with his disciples, breaking bread and drinking wine, now known as the Last Supper.

Many Christians remember this event by sharing bread and wine in a service called Holy Communion, Eucharist or Mass
It is a reminder that Jesus sacrificed his life for mankind.

The word Maundy comes from the command given by Jesus at the Last Supper, that we should love one another. At
Roman Catholic Church services the priest washes the feet of 12 people to commemorate Jesus' washing the feet of
his disciples at the Last Supper.

Good Friday
Trial and crucifixion
Jesus was put on trial by the high priest and found guilty of blasphemy.
He was taken to see Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor, who was responsible for keeping the peace and
deciding who could be put to death. Pilate wanted to release Jesus and presented him to the crowd in the
hope that they would want him to be freed.

However, they chanted crucify him (Mark 15:13) because they were heavily influenced by the religious
leaders and priests who wanted Jesus to be executed. Pilate was therefore pressured into sentencing
Jesus to be crucified.
Jesus was flogged and crucified at the site of Golgotha on the day that Christians know as Good Friday.
Good Friday is the Friday before Easter Sunday when Christians remember Jesus' crucifixion. During
Good Friday services, they reflect on the meaning of the crucifixion and the central message of
Christianity. This message is that through his death on the cross, Jesus atoned for the sin of mankind
which came into the world when Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden, and
through Jesus' sacrifice mankind is reconciled with God.

The main service on Good Friday takes place between midday and 3 pm. In many churches it takes the
form of a meditation based on seven sayings, or last words, of Jesus on the cross, with hymns, prayers,
and short sermons. Roman Catholics start their service at 3 pm, the time that Jesus is thought to have
died.

Saturday – Bible Passage

(Matthew 27: 57-60)
The Burial of Jesus
As evening approached, there came a
rich man from Arimathea, named
Joseph, who had himself become a
disciple of Jesus. Going to Pilate, he
asked for Jesus’ body, and Pilate
ordered that it be given to him. Joseph
took the body, wrapped it in a clean
linen cloth, and placed it in his own new
tomb that he had cut out of the rock.
He rolled a big stone in front of the
entrance to the tomb and went away.

Day of the Week Brief explanation of what happened.

Palm Sunday Jesus rides into Jerusalem on a donkey.

Jesus and his disciples went to Jerusalem at Passover like most people did. Rumours about Jesus had by this time spread over Palestine
and so when he arrived in the city he was welcomed by the Jews. They thought he was the Messiah, the figure they had been waiting
for…the person to lead them to victory over the oppressive Roman regime and re-establish Israel. Jesus rode in on a donkey…humbly…not
on a horse as a warrior king who would lead an uprising.
Monday Jesus turns the traders’ tables over in the Temple
Trading in this part of the Temple complex was normal, but Jesus was angry when he saw traders and money changers cheating people in
the Temple itself. He tipped over the tables saying that they had turned his Father’s house into a den of thieves.
Tuesday Jesus gave further teaching in the Temple
Jesus was challenged by priests about his authority and where it came from. He taught the parable of the wedding banquet and about
paying taxes.
Wednesday
Judas agreed to betray Jesus.

older people. This represents the 30 pieces of silver that Judas betrayed Jesus for.
Maundy Last Supper, arrest and trials begin
Thursday Jesus shares the meal that included bread and wine…preparing his friends for his death (though they did not see this at the time). Jesus
is later arrested after being betrayed by Judas, and put though trials with the Sanhedrin (the ruling council of the Jews) and King Herod.
Good Friday Trial with Pontius Pilate who sentences Jesus to death.
Jesus is whipped, nailed to the cross and left to die.
Jesus had to die as atonement for the sins of human beings. At his death he commended his soul to God. He said that the criminals
beside him would be with him in Paradise – showing it was now open to humans. The temple shroud – separating the Holy of Holies from the
rest of the temple was ripped apart showing all had access to God. Given Sabbath was about to start, so not work could be done, the body
could only be laid in the tomb.
Saturday Shabbat – Jesus’ body lay in the tomb.
The disciples hid, fearing they would be arrested. Losing Jesus had challenged their faith.
Easter Sunday In the morning, the women went to the tomb to anoint Jesus’ body – it was gone.
Why is Holy Week important for
Christians?
What Holy Week means for Christians today
Holy Week is important as it reminds Christians of
God's sacrifice of his son, and also God's love for his people.
Christians can learn much about Jesus through the last week

Explain two ways in which Christians celebrate Holy Week. (5)

Point – Holy week is important for Christians as it is a week to remember

the suffering of Jesus before his crucifixion.
Evidence – On Maundy Thursday Christians go to church on the evening to
celebrate the last supper.
Explain – They remember with sadness, the predictions that Jesus made
about his death, that Judas would betray him for 30 silver coins.

Point – Good Friday is the most solemn day of the year for Christians.
Evidence – In many towns, groups of Christians will walk through streets
following someone carrying a heavy wooden cross as Jesus did.
Explain – This helps Christians remember what Jesus was forced to do.
