Developmental Stages of
Trypanosomes
Developmental stages of Trypanosome
1) Trypomastigote stage (Trypanosome stage)
 A blade like form with a
 Kinetoplast and blepharoplast lie posterior to the nucleus.
 Well developed undulating membrane with a free flagellum.
 Usually in vertebrate host but may also found in arthropod as
infective stage for vertebrate host.
2) Epimastigote stage (Erithidial stage)
 The Kinetoplast and blepharoplast lie anterior to the nucleus
 Short undulating membrane
 The stage found in arthropods but in few species present in
vertebrate as developmental cycle.
Developmental stages of Trypanosome(cont.)
3) Promastigote stage (Leptomonad stage)
 The Kinetoplast and blepharoplast are at the anterior tip of the
body.
 No undulating membrane
 Found in arthropod.

4) Amastigote stage (Leishmania stage)

 Rounded body
 Flagellum absent or represented by a short fibril
 Kinetoplast present.
 Found in both vertebrates and arthropods.
