Aim and Objective

AIM

 To analyze of Small Scale Ice Plant

Objective

 To analyze design will only come out based on how much tons of ice there
do want to produce.
 To analyze of which cycle we should use to meets the tons of ice that
would like to produce.
 To analyze the types of ice plant.
Introduction
 There have to design the system based on how much amount of ice there would
like to produce from the ice plant.

 There need to have a well-understanding in making a small scale ice plant and
its design.

Classification Of Ice Plant

 Ice plants are usually classified by the type of ice they produce; hence there
are block ice plants, flake ice plants, tube, slice or plate ice plants and so on.
 A further sub-classification may be made depending on whether they
produce a "dry" subcooled ice or a "wet" ice.
 Generally, subcooled ice is produced in machines which mechanically
remove the ice from the cooling surface.

Refrigeration Of Ice Plants
• The modern continuous ice plant is designed to operate 24 hours a day, most of
this time unattended.
• The refrigeration system, which includes the compressor, condenser, pipework,
control equipment and the ice-maker itself, should therefore be designed for
reliability, with safeguards against any foreseeable failure or malfunction.

Capacity Of Ice Plants

• As mentioned elsewhere, a number of factors affect the capacity of an ice
maker and its associated refrigeration plant.

Making Ice From Sea Water

• When seawater is frozen slowly, freshwater ice crystals are initially frozen out of
the mixture.
• The whole solution will not be frozen until the temperature has reached -22 C,
the eutectic point. (The eutectic point is a physical constant for a mixture of
given substances.)

Making Ice At Sea
• A number of ice plants are suitable for operation at sea with little modification
to their design and they may use either fresh or seawater supplies.
• Many vessels which process their catch at sea have ice makers installed for
cooling the fish during processing.
• Since they are often at sea for many months at a time, it would be unreasonable
for them to carry ice from a shore-based plant.

Solar Energy Of Ice Plants

• The solar energy refrigeration plant is made as a self contained unit and, for ice
manufacture, the only requirement is a suitable water supply.
• Equipment currently available manufactures block-ice with the blocks
weighing approximately 10 kg each.
• The standard module provides 200 kg of ice per 24 furs, but units for up to
1000 kg per 24 hrs are also available.
Working Principle Of Ice Plant

 The main cycle used for ice plant is vapor compression cycle with
ammonia as the refrigerant in primary circuit and brine solution in
secondary circuit.
 Liquid ammonia acts as a refrigerant in ice plants.
 Evaporation of a liquid needs heat energy.

 When liquid ammonia vapourizes, it absorbs large quantities of heat

without changing its temperature.
 For these reasons, ammonia is widely used as a refrigerant.
Main Component Of Ice Plant

All refrigeration equipment is made of four key components are

• the evaporator
• the condenser
• the compressor
• the throttle valve.

Future Plan
• Require data collected from company to calculate design procedure for
small scale ice plant
• To introduce overall expression of thesis
• To make component detail design and material selection of ice plant
Conclusion
 There are many circles that include how much water there must add, how
much temperature there must reduce and how salt-water must there produce
with ammonia and sodium for calculating how much tons of ice there can
produce.
 And it doesn’t really matter how much there produce for the small rate.
 But if it come to large, the amount and size would have come to large as
well.
 So,there have to recalculate and reduce the data and ratios to meets our
demand.
Scope of Thesis
 For making the ice plant, we have to choose cycles.
 If it is absorption cycle,it is used by solar. If we don’t want to use ordinary
refrigerant cycles, we still can absorb ammonia ,sodium, and water to make
solvent, dividing it back and cooling it down afterwords.
