Life in Madrid:

 Rizal led a Spartan life in Madrid.

 On Saturday evenings he visited the home of Don Pablo Ortiga y Rey. Fell in love with Consuelo, Don Pablo’s daughter.

 Rizal was deeply affected by Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin and Eugene Sue’s The Wandering Jew which aroused his sympathy for the oppressed and
unfortunate people.

 He visited Paris in the summer vacation of 1883.

 He was conferred the degree of Licentiate in Medicine by the Universidad Central de Madrid on June 21, 1884 and Licentiate in Philosophy and Letters
on June 19, 1885.
