SAGE AND BRODY-WHAT AN ADDITION TO A SCHOOL, COUNSELING GROUP OR A
CLASSROOM. I HAD THE GREAT PLEASURE OF WORKING WITH LESLIE GARDNER-
LONGO AND KATIE BAKER IN BRINGING THESE TWO WONDERFUL CANINE
COUNSELORS INTO MY SUPPORT GROUPS AT SOUTHERN AND AT OCEAN’S HARBOR
HOUSE. THERAPY DOGS DO FOR KIDS WHAT TRAINED GROUP FACILITATORS CANNOT
DO. THESE WONDERFUL ANIMALS, OR GROUP CO-FACILITATORS, OPEN CLOSED
MINDS, SOOTHE HURT FEELINGS, NURTURE ACCEPTANCE AND HELP CHILDREN FIND
THEIR WAY-ALL WITHOUT SAYING A WORD. THOUGH I KNOW AND USE MANY
“TRICKS OF THE TRADE” TO GET KIDS ENGAGED, TALKING AND FEELING, THESE DOGS
REALLY HAVE TAUGHT ME A THING OR TWO. ONE: PETTING A DOG WILL OPEN THE
HEART OF A CHILD THAT NEEDS TO TALK. AND TWO: THAT WHEN THE HEART IS
OPEN, THE WORDS WILL COME EASILY. WOW. IT JUST COST A BISCUIT!

What is Social and Emotional Learning?

“The process through which people learn to recognize and manage

emotions, care about others, make good decisions, behave ethically
and responsibly, develop positive relationships, and avoid negative
behaviors. Such skills are critical components of the success of all
schools.”
Elias, 2007
According to CASEL:
