OBJECTIVES:
 Give some importance of classroom management relative to learning
 Define noise relative to the topic (working definition)
 Enumerate the effects of students’ noise
 Share strategies or personal experiences on how to manage students’ noise
What is noise?

 Any sound that is undesired or interferes with one’s hearing of something (Merriam Webster)
 A sound, especially one that is loud, unpleasant, or frightening (Longman Dictionary of Contemporary
English)
 Unwanted sound judged to be unpleasant, loud or disruptive to hearing. (Wikipedia)
 Unwanted, undesired, unpleasant sound which can interfere with or disrupt ones hearing or speaking
What are the possible effects of students’ noise?

 Disruption of discussion
 Disturbance of other students
 Misunderstanding of information
 Inability to understand instruction or lesson
 Minimal learning or no learning at all
What can you do?
1.
 Stop talking and let them talk until they notice that you stopped talking
 Ask them if they are done so that you can continue
2.
 Approach the students slowly
 In a very low voice, ask them what is going on
3.
 Look at them in the eyes for a while
 Stop only when they notice you
What can you do?

 Call his/her attention
 Ask a question about the lesson particularly the one previously discussed or
 ask him/her to share before the class whatever they are discussing

 Pose a question for everyone
 Call the noisy ones to answer just to call their attention

 Ask the student to transfer preferably in front
What can you do?

 Assign task like erasing the writing on the board and the like

 Assign the students to list down the noisy ones

 Approach the group and ask what is going on and remind them to concentrate on their task at hand

1. Make certain the student is aware she's making noise. 


2. Move the student to a study carrel.
3. Try to determine when the student is most likely to make noise. 
4. Give the student positive attention.
