PDMS Equipment

2. Creating the unit 1201

 From the Equipment Arrangement
drawing (A2/XP2000-02/0) we can see
how the unit is orientated, if we model it
with the right orientation we do not have Equipment 0-
point
to rotate it later!
 Observe that the manhole (M1) should
point to south in our Model and that the
most suitable 0-point for the equipment is
the south end of the main cylinder, due to
the fact that it is positioned in the plant
North
with that point
 Goto the drawing A2/XP2000-05/0, the
detail drawing for our unit

/ -5 / -ver.0.2- /
PDMS Equipment

 From the Main Menu Bar pick

• Each type of Primitive has a similar
form
• At Primitive level the Name is
usually left unset, except for Nozzles
• The Position field lets you position
the Primitive (the 0-Point)
• The Wrt (With Respect To) field is by
default the owner of the Primitive but
the Primitive can also be positioned
Wrt whatever database element
• The Attributes field is different for
each type of Primitive
• The Orientation field is used to turn
the Primitives the right way, one or
two axes depending on the type of
Primitive
• In the Representation scroll down
you set the Representation Level, i.e.
obstructions, insulations, reservations

/ -8 / -ver.0.2- /
PDMS Equipment

 We will start by making the main

cylinder of the tank
• Set the Height to 4800
• Set the Diameter to 1410
• Set the Z-Axis to N(orth) since
the Z-axis for a cylinder is axial
and we want to have a horizontal
cylinder
• Set the Position North to 2400,
i.e. half the height of the
cylinder, since the 0-point is at
the midpoint
• The rest of the attributes we will
leave as default
• Press OK

/ -9 / -ver.0.2- /
PDMS Equipment

 On the 3D View Tool Bar press the

Limits CE-button
 Set the Zoom Mode active (F2) and
activate the Borders (F9) if they are
not activated
 In your Members list you now have a
CYLI element owned by the .../BODY
SUBE
 The next step is to create the ends of
the tank with DISH Primitives

/ -10 / -ver.0.2- /
PDMS Equipment

 On the Create Primitives form change

the Type to Dish and press the Apply
button
 The Create Dish form appears
• Set the Diameter to 1410
• Set the Height to 380
• Set the Radius to 100
• Set the Z-Axis to S(outh)
• Press the OK button

/ -11 / -ver.0.2- /
PDMS Equipment

 In the 3D Graphics View click the

right mouse button and select
Limits>Drawlist
 The dish is automatically at the right
position due to four reasons:
• The 0-point of the dish is at the
flat face
• We set the Z-Axis to S
• We positioned the dish at N 0, E
0, U 0 wrt the owner
• We positioned the cylinder by
half the height N
 To create the dish at the other end we
will mirror the first one using the
cylinder as a mirror plane

/ -12 / -ver.0.2- /
PDMS Equipment

 From the Main Menu Bar pick

Create>Copy>Mirror...
 The Mirror form appears
To define the position of the mirror
plane:
• From the Cursor pull down pick
the type of point you need
• From the Intersection pull down
pick the types of points you need
• Fill it in explicitly in the form
 the Plane Direction is to be considered
as the direction of the surface on a mirror

/ -13 / -ver.0.2- /
PDMS Equipment

 Since we can use the cylinder to

define the position of the plane pick
Cursor>Element
 In the 3D Graphics View identify /
select the cylinder with the left mouse
button
 The Mirror form is now updated with
the info from the cylinder; the
position of the 0-point, N 2400, and
the Plane Direction, N, from the Z-
Axis value of the cylinder

/ -14 / -ver.0.2- /
PDMS Equipment

 In the 3D Graphics View press F8 to set

the wireframe mode
 Use the sliders to set your View to a better
position
 You can see the dish highlighted as CE
with axes shown at it’s 0-point
 The Mirror Plane is also shown with a
direction arrow
Note that both S and N as Plane Directions
will work since the mirror can be considered a
double faced mirror
 Press Apply on the Mirror form and press
YES on the Confirm form and then Dismiss
the Mirror form

/ -15 / -ver.0.2- /
PDMS Equipment

 In the 3D Graphics View press the

right mouse button and select
Look>East and press F8 to go back to
shaded mode
 Set the limits with Limits>Drawlist if
necessary
 To make the feet of the tank we will
use two boxes
• The box Primitive has seven P-
points, one on each side and a 0-
point in the 3D centre
 On the Create Primitives form set the
Type to Box and click Apply

/ -16 / -ver.0.2- /
PDMS Equipment

 The Create Box form appears

Set the X-length to 1060
Set the Z-length to 860
Set the Y-length to 200 (approx.)
Set the Position North to 965
Set the Position Down to 430
• The 0-point of the box is in the
3D centre, therefore we need to
move it down by half the Z-
length to get the correct height of
the foot (860 from the centerline
of the tank)
The rest of the Attributes we leave as
default
Click OK

/ -17 / -ver.0.2- /
PDMS Equipment

 Your 3D Graphics View should now look

like this
 The easiest way to make the other foot is to
copy the first one
 From the Main Menu Bar pick
Create>Copy>Offset...
 The Copy with Offset form appears
• The Offset menu gives you
possibilties to pick from and to points
in the model
• In this case we know the offset so the
fastest way is to type it in directly
• Set the Offset Y to 2870 and press
Apply
• Click YES on the Confirm form and
Dismiss on the Copy with Offset form

/ -18 / -ver.0.2- /
PDMS Equipment

 The body of the tank is now complete,

it is time for the nozzles
 In the Members list click your way to
the SUBE /JBJ/1201/NOZZ
 On the Create Primitives form set the
Type to Nozzle and press Apply

/ -19 / -ver.0.2- /
PDMS Equipment

 The Create Nozzle form appears

This is a more complex form since the
Nozzles are picked from a Specification
and contain some intelligence
For the Nozzles you need to set:
• The Name (to get a correct
isometric on the connected pipe)
• The Position
• The Nozzle Type (from a
Specification, company specific)
• The Orientation of the
connection P-point (P-point 1)
• The Height

/ -20 / -ver.0.2- /

 The unit 1201 is now modelled,

equipped with Nozzles for pipe
connections
 Note that we did not add any other
Attributes then the Name to the
Nozzles. The Attribute settings can be
customer specific...
 To finish the unit we will position it
according to the site layout drawing
A2/XP2000-02/0 and add a
Description Attribute to the
Equipment

/ -27 / -ver.0.2- /
PDMS Equipment

 In the Members list jump to the

Equipment /JBJ/1201
 From the Main Menu Bar select
Display>Command Line...
 The PDMS Professional Design Command
Input&Output form appears
In the future this form will be referred to as
the Command Input form
This form is used for command input and
query output
• All commands can basically be done
through this form if you know the
command syntax
• When setting Attributes, using this
form is often the fastest way to work
 We will now set the Description Attribute
for the Equipment /JBJ/1201

/ -28 / -ver.0.2- /
PDMS Equipment

 At the Command line type Q(uery)

ATT(ributes) and press enter
 The output lists all Attributes linked
to the CE, the Equipment in this case
 To set the Description Attribute:
Click on the line Description unset
The line moves down to the Command
line
Type in Description ’Stabilizer reflux
drum’ and press enter to set the Attribute
 At the Command line type Q ATT and
press enter to do a new query and see
your changes

/ -29 / -ver.0.2- /
PDMS Equipment

 To position the tank at the right

position in the model, from the
drawing: W312370, N294502,
U106170, we have a few options
First, make sure that the EQUI is the
CE
As we checked for the most suitable 0-
point for the EQUI before we started the
modelling, we are able to use the
Equipment 0-
coordinates directly point

North

/ -30 / -ver.0.2- /
PDMS Equipment

 The Positioning options:

Read through the options before using one of
them to position the unit
Through the Command Input
• At the Command line type Q POS and
press enter
• Since we have not moved the EQUI
element itself the Position is E 0 N 0
U 0 wrt the owner
• Two possible ways:
- Click down the line and fill in
the coordinates, i.e. Position
W312370 N294502 U106170
and press enter
- Use the move syntax BY, i.e.
type in BY W312370 N294502
U106170 and press enter
- Note that the BY command adds
the input value to the current
coordinate value

/ -31 / -ver.0.2- /
PDMS Equipment

Through the Position Explicitly(AT)... form

• This is basically the same procedure
as changing the Position Attribute at
the Command line
• From the Main Menu Bar select
Position>Explicitly(AT)...
• The Positioning Control form has
been explained in the PDMS Design,
Scope slides and gives you
possibilities to identify an element in
order to select a position in the model
• In this case, as we have nothing to
identify at the required position, we
have to fill in the values of the
coordinates
• Set the Explicit Position according to
the drawing: W312370, N294502,
U106170 and press Apply to position
the Equipment at that explicit position

/ -32 / -ver.0.2- /
PDMS Equipment

Through the Position Relatively (BY)... form

• This equals the command BY at the
Command line, i.e. it adds the given
coordinate value to the current value
• The Positioning Control form has been
explained in the PDMS Design, Scope
slides and gives you possibilities to
identify from and to points in order to
get values
• In this case we can only identify the
from point (the P-point in the south end
of the cylinder), as we do not have a to
point, we have to fill in the values of the
coordinates
• Set the Position By according to the
drawing: W312370, N294502, U106170
and press Apply to position the
Equipment from it’s current position by
the values

/ -33 / -ver.0.2- /
PDMS Equipment

Use one of the ways to position the tank

Note that it will disappear from the 3D
Graphics View because the limits were set for
the prior position of the element
In order to set the limits according to the
current position click Limits CE on the 3D
View Tool Bar
At the Command line type Q POS to check
the current position
Click on the main cylinder and type Q POS
at the Command line
• Note that the position for an element
is always wrt the owner if nothing
else is specified
Type Q POS WRT WORLD at the Command
line
• This gives you the Explicit position
of the cylinder

/ -34 / -ver.0.2- /
PDMS Equipment

 As this unit is finished we can, for the

moment remove it from the Drawlist
and start with the next unit
 Click the Remove CE from Drawlist
button on the Main Tool Bar

/ -35 / -ver.0.2- /
PDMS Equipment

3. Creating the unit 1501A

 From the Equipment Arrangement
drawing (A2/XP2000-02/0) we can
see how the unit is orientated and the
position of it
 Observe that the suction Nozzle (N1)
should point to south in our Model Equipment

and that the most suitable 0-point for 0-point

the equipment is the insertion P-point

of that Nozzle, due to the fact that it
is positioned in the plant with that
point North

 Goto the drawing XP2000-9, the

detail drawing for our unit

/ -36 / -ver.0.2- /
PDMS Equipment

4. Creating the unit 1501B

 From the Equipment Arrangement
drawing (A2/XP2000-02/0) we can
see how the unit is orientated and the
position of it
 Observe that this unit is exactly the
same as the unit 1501A that we just
made
 The easiest way to make this unit is
to copy the one we just made and
move it
 The difference for the West
coordinates is 1810mm
 Make the Zone /JBJ/EQUI the CE
and add it into the Drawlist

/ -70 / -ver.0.2- /
PDMS Equipment

 In the 3D Graphics View press the

right mouse button and select
Limits>Drawlist
We can now see both our units
 To copy the pump we will use the
Command Input window
This allows us to rename the new unit
just changing the string 1501A to 1501B
If we would use the Create>Copy
function our new pump would not
contain any names and we would have to
rename it step by step to get the design
data similar to the old one

/ -71 / -ver.0.2- /
PDMS Equipment

 Make the Equipment /JBJ/1501A the CE

 Go to the Command Input window
At the Command line type Q NAME
Type in the text NEW EQUI /JBJ/1501B
COPY PREV REN /1501A /1501B BY W1810
• NEW EQUI /JBJ/1501B creates a
new Equipment with that name
• COPY PREV tells the program to
copy the CE including elements and
attributes
• REN /1501A /1501B renames the
string ...A to the string ...B
throughout the hierarchy of the CE
• BY W1810 moves the new Equipment
1810mm west
 The three units are now ready!
