RECA
P
THE LIBERATION OF AHALYA
“The bow can hardly even be
gazed upon except
by the mighty. King Janak has
declared that any man who bends
this bow
will win the hand of his daughter
Sita, a jewel among women, and
who was born from the earth
itself. Let us leave for that place
immediately.”
A SLAB
WHO WAS AHALYA?
• Brahma created the most beautiful woman.

• Named her Ahalya ;“one with no ugliness”

• Knowing Indra would want to covet her,

Brahma sent her to Gautama rishi’s
hermitage to live until she reached puberty.

• When Gautama Rishi returned her to

Brahma, pleased by the rishi’s ascetism,
Brahma gave Ahalya to Gautama rishi in
marriage.

• Ahalya is quite vain about her looks.

 Indra, enamored by Ahalya and jilted when
she married Gautama rishi.

 Indra cunningly plans his union with Ahalya.

 Gautama Rishi went out to do his morning

routines

 Indra took the appearance of Gautama

Rishi,asking Ahalya for a union.

 Ahalya, confused as this does not seem like

her husband’s usual behaviour

 Figured out that the man standing before

her was Indra.
 Ahalya consented to the union.

 After it was done, while Indra was

leaving, Gautama rishi returned home.

 Enraged and cursed Indra to be covered

by 1000 vaginas since he was filled with
lust.

 Knowing that Ahalya also consented to

the union knowing that it was not her
husband but another man, Gautama
rishi cursed her to turn into a stone.
 Ahalya and Indra pleaded for
forgiveness

 Gautama rishi reduced Indra’s curse

that he will instead be covered with
1000 eyes.

 He granted Ahalya the boon that when

the son of Dasharatha touches her with
His sacred feet, she will be released
from being a stone.
 Ahalya was overcome with
emotions, and she thanked the
Lord for liberating her from the
curse.

 Gautama rishi then, moved by the

Lord’s gesture, accepted Ahalya
as his wife again.
MITHILA
LORD SHIVA’S BOW IN SITA’s
SWAYAMVAR
• Vishvakarma crafted two divine bows
 Sharanga to Lord Vishnu
 Pinaka to Lord Shiva.

• One day, Lord Shiva become angry with the other gods when
they had denied him a share of the sacrificial offerings made
by the sages.

• Threatened them with the bow saying, “I shall now sever

your worshipable heads from your bodies. Stand ready on the
battlefield if you have any valor.”

• But the gods relented and quickly worshipped the infuriated

Shiva. They had managed to appease him, whereupon He
gave the bow to them.

• The famous bow was given by the gods to Janaka’s ancestor,

Devarata, after he had fought for them in a battle against the
demons.
BIRTH OF SITA
 King Janak loved and cared for his people

 He, like King Dasaratha, longed for children,

and prayed to the Gods to bless him with kids.

 One day, King janak headed for the field and

started ploughing the land.

 After many hours of pushing the plow up and

down the fields, he heard a little coo coming
from the other side of his plow. Out of curiosity
Janaka peeked his head around his rusty old
plow to see what he had heard.

 There lay a wide-eyed little baby girl staring

back at Janaka in a trench in the field. There
was no other explanation other than she was a
gift from the goddess of the earth.

 Janaka immediately fell in love with her. He

quickly swooped her up in his big, strong arms
and took her to his palace. As soon as Janaka
could make the arrangements he adopted her.
He protected her because she was his prized
possession.

SWAYAMVAR DAY
LORD RAM takes part in the swayamvar

 Lord Rama was watching the swayamvar till

then and He looked towards Vishwamitra
who nodded slightly.

 Understanding Vishwamitra indication, Rama

stood with joined palms at the bow’s center.
He turned to Janaka. “I wish to attempt your
test. I shall now try to lift this heavenly bow
to gauge its weight and strength.”
 In the balcony of the hall stood Sita. She
looked at Rama, feeling a natural attraction
for the prince. Until then She had never been
interested in any of Her suitors, although the
most powerful kings from all around the
world had come there. To the gentle Sita
they were all arrogant and overly proud of
themselves.

 Sita was also deeply religious. All her life She

had prayed that Lord Visnu might become her
husband.
