Week 3 Lecture
Today’s agenda………….

Origins of OB

Models of OB
Models of the Organizational Behavior
A model is an abstraction/concept of reality

A simplified representation of some real-word

phenomenon/observable fact.
Organizations differ in the quality of the systems
they develop and maintain also in the results they
achieve.
Varying results are substantially caused by
different models of OB and various models
constitute from thinking and action of a manager.
Four Models of OB

Custodial

Supportive

Collegial

Autocratic model:
It depends on power. Those who are in command
position must have the power to demand “you do
this—or else” meaning that an employee who does
not follow order will be penalized
Managerial orientation is formal i.e. official
authority. Management believes that I know what is
best and the employees’ obligation is to follow
orders.
It assumes that employees have to be directed,
persuaded, and pushed into performance.
The employee orientation is obedience to a boss,
not respect for a manager.
Custodial model:
It depends on economic resources, Managerial
orientation is toward money to pay wages and
benefits since employee’s physiological needs are
already reasonably met.
The employer looks to security needs as a
motivating force.
If organization does not have the wealth to provide
pension and pay other benefits, it can’t follow a
custodial approach.
Supportive model:
It depends on leadership instead of power or
money.
Through leadership, management provides a
climate to help employees for doing their jobs.
 Management orientation is to support the
employee’s job performance rather than to
simply support employee benefit payments as
the custodial approach.
Collegial model:
A useful extension of the supportive model is
collegial model.
The term collegial relates to a body of people
having a common purpose.
It embodies a team concept. It depends on
management building a feeling of partnership
with employees.
Employee feels that managers are contributing
also. Mangers are seen as joint contributors
rather than as bosses.
