Orígenes de los Estados Prehispánicos

The Manteña society,

state or cacicazgo?
by Daniel Rivas A.
INTRODUCTION
In Ecuador, there is a debate whether the Manteño-Huancavilca society
was a state or a confederation of cacicazgos.
Cultural background
Manteño-
Huancavilca Culture
The Manteño-
Huancavilca culture
encompassed several
provinces on the
actual coast of
Ecuador
The archaeologist Emilio Estrada proposed dividing in
two the populations that inhabited the territory of this
society.
Theoretical
framework
Morton Fried (1923 - 1986)
Fried creates stages to which he assigns the
first four letters of the alphabet with their
respective organizational stages:

• Stage A (equal organization)

• Stage B (hierarchical society)
• Stage C (stratification society)
• Stage D (state society)
Stage A (equal
organization)
In this stage there is a primeval egalitarian
society in which, although some individuals
may stand out from the rest in terms of
social prestige or status, access to this hostel
status was not restricted. These groups also
form an economy of reciprocity, in which
the distribution of production is limited to
the family level.
Stage B (hierarchical society)
Stage C (stratification society)
Stage D (state
society)

The State has the role of

establishing or creating a
strong power that controls
and clarifies social
differentiation
