INTRODUCTION

What is Stiction?
 Stiction, also known as
static friction, is the force
that must be overcome by
two surfaces in contact to
enable motion.
 Stiction commonly occurs
in valves during the static
phase. The smooth
movement of valve from
the static phase is
hindered by stiction, which
when overcome leads to a
sudden jerking movement,
coined ‘slip-jump’.
INTRODUCTION

Why is stiction significant?

 Stiction can cause control loops to
oscillate, deviating from desired
operating conditions.
 Can lead to disrupted operations,
poor product quality, increased
material and energy consumption
which lead to increased operating
costs.
INTRODUCTION

Valve stiction causes limit cycles,

Several studies have indicated
which are oscillations that are
that about 20 to 30% of control
periodic finite-amplitude
loops oscillate due to valve non-
instabilities, which lead to
linearities, where the prevalent
variability in product quality,
source of nonlinearities is
accelerates equipment wear and
stiction. (Jelali and Huang, 2010)
lead to system instability.
PROBLEM STATEMENT

 Every processing plant aims for optimal processing conditions,

getting the best product quality with minimal loss from the
process.
 A recent study published from UTP has developed a method of
stiction detection called the butterfly shape-based method
(BSBM)
 Method is purely visual but stiction need to be automatically
detected reliably.
OBJECTIVES

To develop and automated To test and validate using 26

detection index for the Butterfly industrial data sets.
Shape-Based Method using
appropriate functions within
MATLAB that will simplify stiction
detection.

LITERATURE REVIEW

There are generally 4 categories of accepted methods of stiction

detection.
 Cross-correlation function based (Horch, 1999)
 Nonlinearity detection based (Choudry et al., 2004, Thornhill, 2005),
 Waveform shape based (He et al., 2007, Srinivasan et al., 2005, Rossi
and Scali, 2005), and
 Cycle patterns based (kano et al., 2004, Yamashita, 2006a, Scali and
Ghelardoni, 2008).

 This
simulation project aims to present a simple method of
stiction detection by scanning images of normalized datasets
 Graph uses the following plot.

 The dataset is first inserted into MATLAB and plotted to create

the plotted graph.
 Various functions will be tested against the graphs created to
find commonalities in graphs where stiction occurs against
graphs where no stiction occurs.

PRELIMINARY RESULTS


 Preliminary testing indicates there is no
success with stiction detection using
this method. All graphs are greatly
varied, leading to low value.
CONCLUSION

 Further simplifying stiction detection by utilizing software and

automated processes can lead to further optimized plant
operations due to the reduced human error and faster detection.
