What is Past Simple?
• Past simple is one of many tenses that used in English
Grammar.

• Past tense usually used as Verb + ed, but some words –known
as irregular verbs- don’t use this form.

• There are two forms in past simple, regular and irregular,


regular form is past simple that uses –ed in the end of the
verb, and irregular uses another form.

• Eg. regular : Brian played football yesterday.


• Eg. Irregular : I bought some food this morning.
Regular and Irregular
• When regular verbs are used as simple past (known as Verb
2), the only change of the verb is –ed at the end.
• Examples : Play-ed, Kick-ed, Crash-ed.

• Irregular verbs don’t use this form, they change in many kind
of different forms, even sometimes the whole verb changed
when they become verb 2. Example: verb 1 go become verb 2
went .
• Examples : Fight become Fought , Write become Wrote, and
Sleep become Slept
Why do We Use Past
simple?
• Past simple used when we want to
express something that happened in the
past.
• We can use it for expressing one, two, or
many events but all of them must be
occurred in the past.

• Here are some uses of simple past tense :


Use 1 : Completed Action in
the Past
• Use the Simple Past to express an action that
started and finished in the past. Sometimes, the
speaker may not actually mention the specific
time, but they do have one specific time in mind.

• As you can see, the event / act ( that shown as


the X sign) must be occurred in the past.
• Example of this use of simple past :
• 1.I saw a movie yesterday.
• 2. I played football yesterday.
Use 2 : Series of Completed Actions in
The Past
• We also use the Simple Past to express a series of completed actions in
the past. These actions happen 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and so on.

• The events are all happened in the past, so we can use past simple.
• Example of this use :
• 1. I finished work, walked to the beach, and found a nice place to swim.
• 2. He arrived from the airport at 8:00, checked into the hotel at
9:00, and met the others at 10:00.
Use 3 : Habits in The Past
• The Simple Past can also be used to express a habit that stopped in
the past. It can have the same meaning as "used to." We often add
words like: always, often, usually, never, when I was a child, when I
was younger, etc. so the listeners can understand that we are talking
about habits.

• Examples :
• 1. I studied French when I was a child.
• 2. She worked at the movie theatre everyday before she got married.
