BLACK

HOLES
by VARUN VIKRAM SINGH
BLACK HOLES: A Theoretical Definition

 A highly dense region of strong gravitational

effects.
 Not even particles and electromagnetic
radiations can escape.
 Average density of a black hole is 4×1014 g/cm3
and infinite at the centre (singularity)!
 Idea was first proposed by an English
clergyman John Michell in 1784.
TYPES OF BLACK HOLES
(Based on their size and mass)
Three main types:-
1) Primordial Black Holes
size≈1 atom, mass≈1 mountain

2) Stellar Black Holes

size≈ 10 miles radius, mass≈ 20Ms

3) Supermassive Black Holes

size ≈ solar system, mass ≈ >106Ms
HOW ARE THEY FORMED?
WE DO OWN A BLACK
HOLE
• Sagittarius A
•Discovered in 1974
• Located at the centre of

Milky Way.
•Mass ≈ 4 x 106Ms
•Size ≈ dia of Sun
•26k ly away from us
A NEW BEAST
DISCOVERED
•Discovered by Chandra
X-Ray of NASA
•Thanks to EHT (Event

Horizon Telescope)
•Located in M-87 galaxy,

55 million ly away
•Mass = 6.5 billion times

that of Sun
SOME FASCINATIG
QUESTIONS
1) What if we fall inside a Black Hole?
2) How can we see a Black Hole if it
is black?
3) Will our Sun turn into a black hole?
4) Can we see the past while entering
the Black Hole?
5) Do we have a threat of a Black
Hole?
