MOTIVATION BEHIND THE PROJECT
• Agriculture is vital sector of Pakistan economy. Pakistan is one of the world's
largest producer and supplier of food and crops according to different sources.
Pakistan ranks eighth worldwide in farm output.
• Agriculture accounts for about 21% of Pakistan's GDP and employes about 43%
of the labour force.
• In rural areas, people are using direct open sun food drying with its numerous
shortcommings such as contamination by dust, pollution, insects infestation,
over heating due to direct exposure and damage by animals and birds etc.
• In early days convetional methods had been used for drying purposes,
Nowadays for technological advancement we can use this method.
• Conventional methods are very time consuming so, we can use this method to
reduce time.
• Drying is faster because inside the dryer it is warmer than outside.
OBJECTIVES AND SCOPE OF STUDY
Objectives:
• To design a portable solar food dryer
• To simulate of heat transfer using CFD
• To predict the airflow distribution within the drying chambers
• To predict temporal temperature distribution inside the solar dryer
• Validation of the temperature distribution using experiment

Scope of Study:
Calculation of airflow, temperature and convective heat trasfer coefficient in
different compartment. The airflow field and temporal temperature
distribution within the flow domain are modeled and simulated from mass,
momentum and energy conservation equations.
LITERATURE REVIEW
• Petros Demissie et al. [1] predict the flow and temprature distribution within the
drying chamber they predict that higher velocity in bottom most rack shelf compare to
the rest of shelves.
• Majedul Islam et al. [2] predict that natural draft chamber gives best moisture
removal result as compared to attic space type and induced draft chamber.
• Abhay Bhanudas et al. [3] dryer selection depends on a number of parameters such as
solar insolation, ambient tempeature, drying air, velocity, humidity, type of product,
moisture content in the product and mass of product.
• Jose Vasquez et al. [4] mathematical model based on differential equations of a solar
dryer with energy accumulations using paraffin wax to store thermal energy and solar
conditions over time.
• Lyes Bennamoun et al.[5]the study can be developed for other agriculture products
and for the behaviour of the solar batch dryer in different seasons.
• M.N Nijmeh et al.[6]the temperature in the solar dryers are highly dependent on the
quantity of products to be dried, and thus the quantity of the drying can change
accordingly.
Project Timeline (Gantt Chart)
Prepare a Gantt chart in excel (bring the MS excel sheet as well) showing your
project activities such as literature review, designing, prototype development,
testing, analysis etc.). Your chat should be detailed show months as well as
weeks of the month. Us the chat below as a reference.
Design Parameters

• You should mention the design parameter here as well as the initial
design of your project. If you are fabricating something, it is important
that you mention it here and elaborate it.
Expected Results
• Discuss the results that you expect after the completion of your project. Make
sure your results are realistic and detailed. Statements such as “This project
will enhance the efficiency of XYZ” should not be used. These statements are
very vague and being an engineering students you are expected to show
figure, numbers and/or graphs etc.
Conclusions
• State the conclusions of this project, which includes the critical summary of
the literature review, objectives and results.
