FEATURES
Very itchy, red, small bumps on the skin. However, it may take 2-6
weeks for symptoms to develop after being exposed to scabies
Itching is worse at night
Areas commonly affected are the spaces between the fingers and
toes, genital area, belt area, and underarms .
In babies, the head and cheeks may also be affected
If left untreated, may lead to development of secondary bacterial
infection
Other family or household member are often affected as well (This
can help in the diagnosis.)

AIDS IN DIAGNOSING
SCABIES
Persistent constant itching despite application of
numerous medications;
Suboptimal patient hygiene;
Patient age and history of sexual activity;
Vesicular rash on the hands, especially between the
fingers or on the volar wrists, thenar/hypothenar skin,
and suprapubic skin;
Edematous red papules on the scrotum and/or penis;
Additional family members similarly affected.
DEFINITIVE DIAGNOSIS

Made by direct visualization of the mite, eggs,


or feces.
Mineral oil should be placed on the end of a
burrow, preferably where a black dot is visible.
The area should then be scraped with a number 5
scalpel blade and the scrapings shed onto a slide.
TREATMENT:
PERMETHRIN
5% LOTION
Permethrin is a pyrethroid pediculocide and
scabicide.
It causes paralysis and death of the pest by
inhibiting sodium ion influx through nerve
cell membrane channels delaying
repolarisation.
