TRANS PALATAL ARCH

APPLIANCE
Ms. Nimrah Razzaque Memon
Trans palatal appliance Indication

 Bilateral, fixed, passive & non-functional space maintainer.

 Trans palatal arch is a secondary method of anchorage support in upper
posterior segment.
 It is used in the upper arch only.
 Indicated in unilateral loss of primary 2nd molar after eruption of PFM
 Effective in preventing molars from rotating around palatal roots
 Used when bilateral loss of the D and multiple loss of primary molars
 Prevents anchorage loss
Construction

 Trans palatal arch runs across the palatal vault avoiding contact with soft
tissue.
 Ideally, the appliance should be formed so that it lies passive in the molar
sheaths and contoured to the palatal tissue to maintain about 2 mm from the
mucosa . This will allow optimal comfort without impingement into the
palatal mucosa.
 If the TPA is placed 6-8 mm down from palate it can induce molar intrusion
due to tongue pressure.
 It is made by 0.9mm stainless steel round wire when it is soldered to the
molar bands with loop placed in the middle of palate so that wire is placed 2
mm from the roof of palate.
Advantage

 Lack of acrylic button, so less irritation and more cleansable.

Disadvantage
 Lack of anterior stop = possible tooth shift
