melody, harmony, rhythm and

MEDIUM OF
MUSIC
TONE is the medium of music
and refers to the sound that
travels through air and reaches
the audience. It is produced by
an instrument or by the voice
and has four qualities such as
timbre, pitch, duration and
intensity.
FOUR QUALITIES OF
TONE
TIMBRE. It is also called as a tone
color or tone quality. It is
distinctive quality of a tone.
PITCH. It refers to the highness or
lowness of a tone. It is also the
vibrations and sound-producing
material determine the pitch of the
tone: the slower the vibrate, the
slower the beat; the shorter the
vibrating material, the higher the

DURATION. It is the length of sound
in time. Also, the varying length of
sounds in time creates rhythm, and
these variations are what makes
composition interesting.
INTENSITY. It means the loudness
and softness of a sound produced by
the varying degrees of pressure

Andante. It is steady-walking tempo.
Moderato. Moderate
Allegro. It is fast, happy.
Presto. Very fast beat.

patterns. It can be seen or felt

TIMBRE. It is the specific sound of
something. It is the perceived sound
quality of a musical note, sound or
tone. In simple terms, timbre is what
makes a particular musical sound
have a different sound from another,

of individual musical lines and the
relationship that the lines have to

FORM. It is the shape or structure
of something. The way that music
is organized.
